Following The Maze Runner opening with the top spot at the box office this weekend, 20th Century Fox has announced that the sequel, The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, will arrive in theaters September 18, 2015.

The follow-up will open against Universal's Everest and Warner Bros.' Black Mass next September. The Maze Runner is the first book in a trilogy written by James Dashner, which was followed up by The Scorch Trials and The Death Cure, which may be adapted by 20th Century Fox in the future.

The Maze Runner director Wes Ball will return to direct from a script by T.S. Nowlin, who co-wrote the first film with Noah Oppenheim and Grant Pierce Myers. No cast members are confirmed yet, but it seems likely that the main cast will return, including Dylan O'Brien, Aml Ameen, Ki Hong Lee, Blake Cooper, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Will Poulter and Kaya Scodelario.

The Maze Runner centers on a young man named Thomas (Dylan O'Brien), who wakes up in a mysterious place known as The Glade, which is surrounded by a massive maze, as he must work together with a number of young captives to find a way out.
