It seems that the Yellowjackets have each other's backs, even off-screen. Recently, beloved Yellowjackets star Melanie Lynskey revealed that she was body-shamed by a member of staff on the set of the hit Showtime drama. However, she added that her co-workers were quick to take her side in the whole ordeal.

Melanie Lynskey is a fan-favorite cast member of the Showtime series, where she plays the 2021 version of the character of Shauna (whose 1996 version is played by Sophie Nelisse). During an interview with Rolling Stone Magazine, Lynskey shared the incident that has caused quite the buzz among fans as well as the production team. Apparently, a member of the hit show’s production staff asked her how she planned to lose weight.

They were asking me, ‘What do you plan to do? I’m sure the producers will get you a trainer. They’d love to help you with this.

After the incident, Lynskey's costars, Tawny Cypress, Christina Ricci, and Juliette Lewis, immediately came to her defense, with Lewis writing a letter to the Yellowjackets producers. The actress added that she has also seen this criticism online, with some taking issue with a recent storyline that saw her character in an affair with Adam, a mysterious young artist played by Peter Gadiot.

I’m just like, ‘Wow, really? That’s where people’s heads are at, that the most important thing is being thin or young...

It was really important to me for [Shauna] to not ever comment on my body, to not have me putting a dress on and being like, 'I wish I looked a bit better.' I did find it important that this character is just comfortable and sexual and not thinking or talking about it, because I want women to be able to watch it and be like, 'Wow, she looks like me and nobody's saying she's the fat one. That representation is important.

Lynskey has been vocal about facing this previously as well, as she revealed in an interview with Denizen:

It’s a bummer to have to say this, but the biggest challenge I’ve faced in my career would be my own body image and the way that the industry views people’s bodies...

There’s sort of an implicit expectation of perfection because everybody looks the same. But I had a bad eating disorder for 10 years, and even when I was like 58 kilograms [128 pounds], I would still be shamed in wardrobe fittings for not being sample size.

However, Lynskey has a rather dedicated fanbase for her portrayal of Shauna on Yellowjackets. In fact, it is simply hard to imagine anyone other than her portraying the role of an older Shauna in the series.
