Memphis Gets Back on Track with Director Paul Greengrass
Last April, we reported that director Paul Greengrass' drama Memphis was being shelved for at least one year. It seems that the project is now back on track, with the filmmaker looking to team up with Wild Bunch to finance.
The story is based on the last days in the life of heralded activist Martin Luther King, who was shot and killed in Memphis in 1968. This two-fold drama will also explore the intense manhunt for his killer, James Earl Ray, which involves the same federal authorities who had wiretapped Martin Luther King's telephone.
Universal Pictures was previously set to produce and distribute before backing out. Although the deals are still coming together, it seems that Memphis will be Paul Greengrass' next movie. The original plan was to release the drama over the Martin Luther King holiday weekend in January. It is possible that now they may be aiming for that weekend in 2014, if all the financing comes together.
