It has almost been a decade since the Twilight Saga’s cinematic run of five movies came to an end with Breaking Dawn Part 2, yet the franchise has been as popular as ever amongst fans even without any new additions to the series. However, in 2020, author Stephenie Meyer finally released her new novel, Midnight Sun, which had been delayed for a number of years due to versions of the story being leaked online by someone she had shared the story with. That started speculation over whether the new installment will be adapted to the big screen. If it were to happen, it appears that at least two of the original cast members would be up for a return to Forks, Washington.

Having pulled in over $1.3 billion between them, the Twilight movie franchise along with the massively successful book series, there is always going to be a buzz around any new additions to the franchise. When the new 658-page novel dropped in August last year, talk of a potential movie version was pretty much the first thought on most fans minds, and although there are a number of reasons why it may not happen, original stars Kellan Lutz and Ashley Greene have said that they are favor of a new movie rounding out the Twilight Saga.

While appearing at C2E2, Lutz, Greene and Jackson Rathbone were asked about the possibility of a movie being made of the latest belated addition to the novel series, and Lutz in particular seemed pretty enthusiastic about it, commenting, “I mean, I love that one," he said, according to The Wrap. "I so wish we could make a movie with that. Emmett has so many more funny lines in that one. It’s awesome." While Rathbone, who played one half of couple Jasper and Alice alongside Greene in the movies, didn’t have much to say about possibly reprising his role, Greene did ask Lutz if she could join him if it ever came about.

When it comes to the actual possibility of Midnight Sun ever being made into a film, there are two very big stumbling blocks and they both revolve around the central character of Edward Cullen. The novel itself is essentially a retelling of the original Twilight story, but told from the point of view of Edward rather than Bella Swan. Whether that retelling of the same story would translate well to screen, or just seem like a rehash of the original movie is something that would potentially derail a big screen adaptation.

Then there is the fact that lead actor, Robert Pattinson, has desperately tried to distance himself from the franchise and is now heavily involved in DC’s The Batman, meaning it is unlikely he would want to undo all the hard work of the last several years by returning to the young adult arena again. Additionally, the same could also be said of Kristen Stewart, who has also been trying to get away from her most iconic role recently.

While other young adult franchises, such as Harry Potter and The Hunger Games both appear to be gearing up for a big screen revival with rumors of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child having circulated for years, and The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes already in development, perhaps expectation of a Twilight return shouldn’t be set too high just yet.
