Modern Family was a sensational hit among viewers, spending a large portion of the 2000s playing on TV non-stop. Due to its popularity, the show ran for 11 seasons, racking up an impressive 250 episodes from 2009 to 2020. Not only that, it would collect a brag-worthy total of 22 Emmy Awards, including several wins for Outstanding Comedy Series. For those who may not remember, the show features three unique types of families: nuclear, same-sex, and blended, who all live in Los Angeles. All three families are interrelated through Jay Pritchett (Ed O'Neill) with his daughter Claire (Julie Bowen) and son Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson).

Updated December 13, 2023: This article has been updated to better reflect recent roles the cast of Modern Family has taken on since the series ended.

Even though the show was hugely popular with viewers, Modern Family held a special place in the world of TV for its diversity and representation of sexual groups. It is true that for all intents and purposes, Modern Family is a normal show that could be enjoyed by anyone. But, over time, they became celebrated for their representation of gay couples, their culturally diverse cast, and their representation of immigrants and non-native Americans. They were ahead of their time for TV purposes, featuring a gay male couple six years before the US legalized same-sex marriage. Knowing the impact this series had on viewers, we can't help but wonder where our featured Modern Family cast is today and what they've done since the show came to an end.

Before Modern Family, the child star had already had parts in TV shows such as Phineas and Ferb, ER, and Criminal Minds and in films like Ice Age: The Meltdown, Bambi II, and Speed Racer. However, it's her role in the hit ABC mockumentary that she's best known for.

Since the show ended, Winter has worked on a number of projects, including lending her voice to an episode of the Disney Channel animation Elena of Alavor, as well as the 2022 video game The Quarry, and appearing as a contestant on Fox reality show Stars on Mars. She also starred alongside Leah Lewis and Sasha Fox in Tripped Up.

Julie Bowen starred as Claire Dunphy, the wife of Phil Dunphy, daughter of Jay Pritchett, and mother to Haley, Alex, and Luke in Modern Family. Before her 250-episode run on the TV series, in which she was in every single episode aired, she mainly devoted her working time to TV series. She starred in Happy Gilmore, ER, Ed, Lost, Weeds, Boston Legal, and Extreme. Although she spent a ton of time on Modern Family, she still found time for some other projects, such as Horrible Bosses, Family Guy, and Life of the Party.

After Modern Family ended in 2020, Bowen starred in Hubie Halloween as Violet Valentine, Ducktales as Penumbra, The Fallout as Patricia Cavell, and Mixtape as Gail. Sofia Vergara is a figure we've seen many times, especially in the last decade. Before landing her role in Modern Family, she starred in Soul Plane, Four Brothers, Meet the Browns, and Madea Goes to Jail. That being said, she does have two upcoming TV series: Zorro, where she served as executive producer; and Griselda, a miniseries about the notorious drug queen Griselda Blanco. The latter is currently set to be released in January 2024. Since 2020, she has been a judge on the television series America's Got Talent.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson as Mitchell Pritchett

Before Modern Family aired, Jesse Tyler Ferguson had a limited acting career, with some short appearances in Ugly Betty, Do Not Disturb, and The Class. He fulfilled his role gracefully on Modern Family, playing Mitchell Pritchett, Jay's son, Cameron's husband, and Lily's father. During the filming of the series, Ferguson made a few pop-in appearances in some TV series, but he mostly focused on his role in Modern Family.

Since the conclusion of the show, he has taken on roles in Pete the Cat as Syd and Stan, Ivy + Bean: Doomed to Dance as Monsieur Joy, and made some quick appearances in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series and The Good Fight. Tyler Ferguson's most recent role was in fellow Modern Family alumni Elizabeth Bank's 2023 comedic horror film, Cocaine Bear, where he played the part of Peter.

The wonderful ensemble of the hit series Modern Family has some interesting facts amongst them.

Nolan Gould as Luke Dunphy

Not many people know that, unlike the character he plays, Nolan Gould is a genius. He possesses an IQ of 150 and is an active member of Mensa — a far cry from the sweet but often dim-witted Luke Dunphy. Since Modern Family began, Gould has made a number of TV appearances as himself, including ones in Hell's Kitchen, Celebrity Dating Game, and, perhaps most interestingly, an episode of Whose Line is it Anyway?

In terms of acting, he has made guest appearances in episodes of Good Luck Charlie and Sofia the First, as well as starring in films such as Friends with Benefits and The To Do List. For a time, his only acting gig since the show ended was in an episode of Grey's Anatomy as Chase Sams. However, his next big performance can be found in The Nana Project. Gould stars alongside Nicky Whelan and Morgan Fairchild in this mockumentary film, which originally hit the film festival scene in September 2023.

Rico Rodriguez as Manny Delgado

Rico Rodriguez starred as Manny, Gloria's son and Jay's stepson in Modern Family. Being one of the younger stars on the show, Rodriguez didn't have a ton of previous acting roles before landing his role in the series, garnering only here-and-there appearances in various TV shows. During the filming process of the 11-year-long show, he had a similar acting experience, making some pop-in appearances on shows like Good Luck Charlie, Austin & Ally, and The Lion Guard. Since the end of Modern Family in 2020, Rodriguez has not appeared in any other films or TV shows.

Aubrey Anderson-Emmons Lily Tucker-Pritchett

Actress Aubrey Anderson-Emmons joined the cast of Modern Family during its third season, taking over the role of Lily Tucker-Pritchett. The daughter of Mitchell and Cameron, Lily grows up to be a moody and blunt young woman with a manipulative streak. In reality, Anderson-Emmons is the daughter of comedian Amy Anderson, and the two have a YouTube Channel together called FoodMania Review, on which they discuss and review different types of food. Aside from Modern Family, Anderson-Emmons's only other TV credits are ones as herself in episodes of Bill Nye Saves the World and Paradise Run.

Reid Ewing as Dylan Marshall

On the show, Reid Ewing played Dylan Marshall, the simple-minded, on-again, off-again boyfriend of Hayley. Ewing's resume away from Modern Family is a pretty impressive one, with the actor managing to bag himself recurring roles in Zeke and Luther and Good Luck Charlie. He also managed to snag roles in films such as Fright Night and The Truth Below.

All of these credits came while Ewing was on the show, and he hasn't worked on any film or TV projects since Modern Family came to a conclusion. The actor has suffered from mental health struggles, including body dysmorphic disorder, which may explain why he's reluctant to step back into the limelight. He has since appeared in a pair of short films, Always Come in Second and Nest, which were released in 2021 and 2022 respectively.

Jeremy Maguire as Joe Pritchett

The youngest member of the main cast, Jeremy Maguire portrayed the character of Joe Pritchett, the son of Jay and Gloria, and half-brother of Manny. He may only be 12 years old, but Maguire can already boast a flourishing career, having taken on a lead role in the Turner & Hooch continuation series in 2021 and a part in the 2017 film I'm Not Here. Maguire's most recent acting credit was in an episode of the CBS procedural drama, S.W.A.T, in 2023.
