A sequel to the 2003 Christmas comedy Bad Santa
After several years of development, The Weinstein Company is finally moving forward with Bad Santa 2, and now the cast is coming together. The Wrap is reporting that Kathy Bates has signed on to portray the mother of Billy Bob Thornton's Willie Soke in the upcoming comedy sequel. No details have been released about her character, or how she fits into the story at this point.
We reported last month that Bad Santa 2 will hit theaters in 2016, with production scheduled to begin this January in Montreal. Very little is known about the story at this point, but Kathy Bates' character is described as a "foul-mouthed" woman. The Wrap also reports that original Bad Santa stars Tony Cox and Brett Kelly will reprise their roles, but it isn't known if Lauren Graham or Lauren Tom will be back for this follow-up.Read More
Miramax and Broad Green Pictures announced today that Billy Bob Thornton will reprise his signature role as Willie Soke in Bad Santa 2.The sequel is a follow-up to the raucous comedy hit Bad Santa first released in 2003. Geyer Kosinski will produce.
David Thwaites will oversee the project for Miramax and Victor Moyers for Broad Green Pictures. Principal photography will commence in January 2016 in Montréal, Québec, Canada. Fargo star Billy Bob Thornton recently took part in a Hollywood Masters discussion for The Hollywood Reporter, where he offered an update on the long-awaited sequel Bad Santa 2.
It should be noted that, in October 2013, five months after Doug Ellin signed on to write the script, Warner Bros. gave his Entourage movie the green light, with production commencing in January 2014. It isn't known if Doug Ellin completed the script before starting work on Entourage, but he did cast Billy Bob Thornton in a key role in that movie.Read More

We reported last July that Hot Tub Time Machine director Steve Pink signed on to direct and rewrite the script, but it seems now he is no longer attached to the sequel. Billy Bob Thornton recently caught up with The Playlist revealing some good news for Bad Santa 2. Earlier last year Johnny Rosenthal and John Phillips were writing separate scripts for the sequel.
The original follows two conmen who go on a road trip to malls dressed as Santa and his elf. Rather than spreading good cheer, the duo's motive is to rob each establishment, a strategy that becomes complicated when they encounter an 8-year-old who teaches them the true meaning of Christmas.
