When his late mother appears in a vision and tells him to go to Bucharest, Charlie immediately boards a plane across the Atlantic. But when he meets a fellow passenger, Charlie finds himself with another promise to fulfill. Charlie does so – and falls head over heels in love with Gabi, a beautiful musician.

However, a vicious gangster has already laid claim to Gabi, and has no intention of letting her go. Determined to protect her, Charlie enters into the hallucinatory, Romanian underworld filled with violence and, strangely enough, love.

Shia LaBeouf stars as a young man who sees a vision of his dead mother, which leads him on a journey to Bucharest, Romania. There he meets and falls in love with the girlfriend (Evan Rachel Wood) of a dangerous gangster (Mads Mikkelsen).

Melissa Leo and Til Schweiger have joined the cast of The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman for Voltage Pictures and director Fredrik Bond.

Shia LaBeouf stars as the title character, who falls for a young woman (Evan Rachel Wood) under the control of a violent mob boss (Mads Mikkelsen). Melissa Leo will play Charlie's late mother, whose spirit guides him through this ordeal. Til Schweiger is portraying Darko, a Serbian mobster who is sent to America to avoid a war crimes tribunal.

Shia LaBeouf will once again star in The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman, the actor's long-gestating project that once had Zac Efron attached to star.

Now set up at Voltage Prods. and Bona Fide Prods., pre-production has begun on the film, which will be directed by acclaimed commercials director Fredrik Bond, from a Black List script by Matt Drake (Project X).

Fredrick Bond to Direct Untitled Matt Drake Project

Zac Efron will star in Mandate Pictures' Untitled Matt Drake Project, a romantic actioner written by Matt Drake. The film will be directed by commercial director Fredrik Bond. The screenplay, originally titled The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman, was featured on the 2007 Black List. Albert Berger and Ron Yerxa of Bona Fide Productions will produce along with William Horberg. Mandate president Nathan Kahane and Dean Parisot will executive produce. Carlo Martinelli will serve as a co-producer. Lawrence Grey will oversee the project on behalf of Mandate. The film is a priority project for the company. Lionsgate is handling international sales.

The film will follow Zac Efron, a suburban kid, who spontaneously travels to Eastern Europe to find himself. Early on in his comedic journey, he falls for an alluring young woman and the only thing standing between them is her charismatic, dangerous ex from a criminal underworld. Armed with little more than his wit and naive charm, Efron endures one bruising beat down after another in order to woo the girl he loves and achieve salvation.

Zac Efron will star in The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman, stepping into a role that Shia LaBeouf was once attached to.

We reported back in April that Shia LaBeouf would star in the drama, with Dante Ariola directing. Not only has Shia LaBeouf departed the project, but Dante Ariola has backed out as well. Mandate Pictures is currently seeking directors for The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman.
