‘Coach Carter’ Takes the Top Spot from ‘Hitch’

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount Home Entertainment's 's Coach Carter topped Nielsen VideoScan's First Alert preliminary national sales charts its first week in stores, dunking Sony's Hitch to the No. 2 spot for the week ending June 26.

Hitch did, however, remain on top of Home Media Retailing's rental chart for the same week, generating an additional $10.3 million to boost its take to $21.1 million after two weeks in stores. In rental stores, the arrival of Coach Carter and several other new theatrical releases, each with moderate boxoffice earnings, led to an uptick of nearly 25% in consumer spending, to an estimated $178.5 million, according to Home Media Retailing market research.

According to Variety, Paramount's Coach Carter surged ahead of the competition over the first three days of Martin Luther King holiday weekend, scoring a $23.6 million debut and socking the Fockers.

The Samuel L. Jackson drama about a basketball coach in an inner-city school played a relatively light run of 2,524 theaters in its opening frame.
