‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ Interview with Eloise Mumford | EXCLUSIVE

When Universal Pictures and Focus Features picked up the rights to E.L. James' scintillating novel Fifty Shades of Grey, and its subsequent sequels, in 2013, many prognosticators and analysts thought the studios had landed a surefire hit, given the enormous popularity of the books. They were not wrong, with the adaptation taking in over $569 million worldwide from just a $40 million budget. Even if you haven't read the books or seen this movie, you likely know that this erotic story centers on Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) and Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson), but this adaptation is chocked full of stellar supporting performances as well, including Eloise Mumford as Ana's roommate Kate. It's Kate, in fact, who essentially sets up her roommate's first meeting with Christian, which leads into their unique "relationship." I recently had the chance to speak with Eloise Mumford over the phone about Fifty Shades of Grey, which is available on Blu-ray and DVD starting today, May 8. Take a look at our conversation below.

I just wanted to say first that I saw Drones a few years back, and I really enjoyed it. I thought it was a really mind-blowing movie.

‘Fifty Shades’ Director Won't Return for ‘Darker’ Sequel

It isn't known if Universal is actively seeking a director to take over for both Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed quite yet. Stars Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan are under contract to return as Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey for both follow-ups, but we reported earlier this month that they both want significant raises, since the first movie turned out to be such a big hit. There have been rumors of clashes between Sam Taylor-Johnson and E.L. James, who had an enormous amount of creative control for a first-time author, as she tried to please the fans of her books as much as possible. We reported earlier this month that Universal is eyeing an early 2016 production start date for Fifty Shades Darker, and planned release date for early 2017.

Fifty Shades of Grey has earned over $164 million domestically and $558 million worldwide, from just a $40 million production budget. Who do you think should take the helm on Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed? Let us know what you think below.

‘Fifty Shades Darker’ to Shoot in 2016; Leads Want Raise

Based on the hugely popular novel by E.L. James, Fifty Shades of Grey has become a phenomenon unlike any other, raking up $550 million at the worldwide box office. So it should come as no surprise that it's two main leads are seeking a pay raise. Both Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan want more money moving into Fifty Shades Darker, which was announced just before the first installment hit theaters. It is expected to shoot in early 2016, for a proposed 2017 release date.

Sources close to the production report that both actors were paid $250,000 each, plus tiered box office bonuses. The novel series is a trilogy, and both actors did sign a three-picture deal. Though it is not uncommon for franchise stars to renegotiate their contract once the first film proves to be a hit. Both are looking for a 7-figure raise before moving onto Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed. It is also reported that neither actor received any backend compensation for the first film. It is believed that renegotiations are still six months away, but the pair will follow the lead of stars involved with both Twilight and The Hunger Games, who received raises after their first movies proved to be hits at the box office.
