Friday the 13th

(2009)

Searching for his missing sister, Clay heads up to the eerie woods of legendary Crystal Lake where he stumbles on the creaky remains of rotting old cabins that lie in wait behind moss-covered trees. And that's not the only thing hiding under the brush. Against the advice of police and cautions from the locals, Clay pursues what few leads he has with the help of a young woman he meets among a group of college kids up for an all-thrills weekend. But they are about to find much more than they bargained for. Little do they know, they've entered the domain of one of the most terrifying specters in American film history - the infamous killer who haunts Crystal Lake armed with a razor-sharp machete...Jason Voorhees.

‘Friday the 13th’ Reboot May Use Found Footage Technique

Paramount Pictures is reportedly considering a found footage angle for the next Friday the 13th reboot, which they are producing with Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes.

Back in June, we reported that Paramount Pictures has retained control of the Friday the 13th franchise, which Warner Bros. gave up as part of a deal to co-produce and co-distribute Interstellar. Paramount only has the rights for five years, so if a Friday the 13th movie doesn't hit theaters by 2018, the franchise moves back to Warner Bros.

BOX OFFICE BEAT DOWN: ‘Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail’ Conquers the Box Office with $41.1 Million

Tyler Perry is back to his old tricks. In a move that has surprised no one, his latest theatrical dramedy Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail pulled in $41.1 million over the weekend, becoming the number one film at the box office. While the movie currently ranks as the twentieth highest grossing fat suit movie of all time, it is Perry's biggest opening weekend thus far, proving once and for all that the man owns February. With an opening weekend this high, you can look for even more films from Perry's signature brand sometime in the very near future.

This week's only other new release, Sony Screen Gem's Fired Up, didn't fair quite so well. The poorly marketed teen comedy about a couple of jocks who join their high school cheerleading team, took an immediate nosedive at the box office and wound up in ninth place with just $6 million. Expect it to be out of sight and mind by next week.

BOX OFFICE BEAT DOWN: Jason Takes the Box Office as ‘Friday the 13th’ Slashes Its Way to $42.2 Million

Jason took the box office this weekend, with his Friday the 13th earning an estimated $42.2 million dollars. That is the biggest weekend take of the year thus far, and it beats the cumulative earnings of any previous Friday the 13th ever released with the exception of Freddy vs. Jason. This is certainly good news for both producers Platinum Dunes and longtime fans, as they are pretty much guaranteed a sequel now that their favorite slasher has proven his ability to hack up the bank.

In the second and third place spots were two holdovers from previous weeks. The romantic comedy He's Just Not That Into You dropped down one space to number two with another $19.6 million to its name. In just two weeks, this Valentine-themed charmer has earned an estimated $55 million. Coming in at third is the little Fox action film that has surprised many. Taken earned another $19.2 million, bringing its earnings up to $77.9 million. It should reach $100 million in the states before it completely drops off the top ten. Its current worldwide grosses stands at $146.9 million. That's a pretty decent take for a film that didn't really get any promotional push at all.
