Gatchaman

"Gatchaman," scheduled for release in early 2011, originated in Japan in the early 1970s as the television series "Science Ninja Team Gatchaman." Aired in the U.S. as "Battle of the Planets" and "G-Force," it soon became a widely popular syndicated TV series.

Featuring some of the most ambitious action sequences ever seen in animation, "Gatchaman" is set in a future world grappling with environmental and technological issues. The story focuses on five reluctant heroes whose remarkable genetic code makes them Earth's only hope of defeating extra-terrestrial invaders.

Concept Reel for Animated ‘Gatchaman’ Movie Revealed

Way back in 2009, Imagi Studios was developing an animated Gatchaman movie. The project was left unfinished and never saw the light of day after the studio shut down a year later. Today, we have a concept reel, a pre-visualization video and photos from the project, which reveal what fans may have come to expect from this project, based on the 1970s Japanese animated series about a team of ninja warriors who battle an advanced terrorist organization hell-bent on taking over the world.

It should also be noted that there was a live-action Gatchaman movie released in Japan earlier this year, although it isn't known when the movie may debut on this side of the pond. You can CLICK HERE to check out the international trailer for that movie, which was released this summer.

‘Astro Boy’ Flies On! Rumors of the Film's Canceling Are Premature

We announced that Imagi Studios, the company behind the recent TMNT film, and the makers of the upcoming Astro Boy and Gatchaman movies, had shut down, telling animators not to come in to work on Monday. While it was speculated whether or not this meant a stoppage or an end to the work being down on Astro Boy, io9 now reports that the shutdown is just temporary.

What does this mean for the final fate of Astro Boy? "We want to do everything to get Astro Boy out the door," says Corbett. The animation is apparently about 50 percent rendered and complete, and nearly all of the vocal performances have been recorded. With the money set to arrive in February, completing Astro Boy shouldn't be a problem. In the meantime, Imagi is still raising money to get Gatchaman into production for a November 2010 release. "We're trying to do a film every year to 18 months," Corbett says.

Have ‘Astroboy’ and ‘Gatchaman’ Been Grounded?

Imagi, the animation studio behind Astro Boy and Gatchaman, may be out of cash and shutting down operations, at least temporarily. The word comes from Steve Hulett, the Business Rep. and Kevin Koch the president of The Animation Guild (TAG), Local 839 IATSE on their amazingly cool blog about the ins and outs of being an animator.

There hasn't been an official word from the studio, but according to Koch, one of Imagi's LA area animators was called over the weekend of January 24 and told that the studio was out of cash and that he should not report to work on Monday. This comes on the heels of the company reportedly having cashflow problems related to the credit crunch.
