Box Office Beat Down: ‘Jumper’ Gets a Jump on the Weekend Box Office with $27.2 Million

Jumper was the clear winner this weekend at the box office. The long gestating Doug Liman sci-fi action thriller went through many cast changes before Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith's own Hayden Christensen and Samuel L. Jackson came aboard this ride of a lifetime. That combination proved to be box office gold yet again with a strong $27.2 million take. Liman has stated in the press that he wants to turn this into a franchise, and the film's ending certainly leaves it open for one. Debuting at number one pretty much guarantees that we will be seeing David Rice and the Paladins again sometime in the near future.

There was an intense battle for second and third place, but it looks like those inner city kids of Step Up 2 the Streets have won this war of supremacy. Just barely. The Disney dance sequel took in an estimated $19.6 million over the four-day weekend. Hot on its heels with an even $19 million take was the fairy and troll adventure The Spiderwick Chronicles, which is an adaptation of the popular kids' book by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black.
