When Madagascar got released in 2005, people despised the living crap out of it for being a rushed film by Dreamworks and later on, they made a sequel named Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa and while it was kinda better than the first, it was more of a less-so feel of a movie that you would expect from a sequel. However, Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted is the exception of the Madagascar franchise and... Wow, what an amazing experience in 3D! Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted, like Toy Story 3, proves that the 3rd time is the real charm.
Madagascar 3 takes place after Escape 2 Africa as Alex, Melman, Gloria and Marty decide to go to Europe, find the penguins and the monkeys and go to New York. However, everything backfires when Alex and friends get spotted by humans and a crazy animal control officer Captain Chantel DuBois chases them all around the world, so that DuBois can have Alex's head as a trophy to her wall... BTW, she defies the laws of physics in anyway possible. They all decide to join a circus that are led by Vitaly, a tiger with a Russian accent, Gia, the cheetah and Stefano, the Italian sea lion who can't control his emotions I guess. Since the circus kinda blows and in desperate need for a new act, Alex decides to help them out and make the best circus show that no one has ever seen before.
And in truth, they did it.
The plot is very thin and swallow like the other Madagascar movies, but the new characters are interesting and fun to watch, especially Vitaly, which really let me interested on knowing more about his character. Remember that god awful villain in Escape 2 Africa that rips off Scar from The Lion King? Well, the villain in Madagascar 3 is better and more sinister than the second Madagascar movie. DuBois is a psychotic and crazy bitch in this movie as she can make some insane tricks with her motor scooter while chasing the animals, run through walls and she can smell their scents very far away. I'm just terrified by her right now. The only negative for Madagascar 3 is that they add the "You lied to me? I trusted you" part in the movie and it was REALLY unnecessary for the movie.
But the rest of Europe's Most Wanted is just amazingly well done. The animation is far better, it's like Dreamworks took inspirations from Pixar's animation style and added it with their own attention to detail. The city and locales are extremely well animated with rich colors and breathtaking background art mixed in. The 3D is amazing. They really took a lot of advantage with the 3D and the neon TRON like circus scene is the proof of that fantastic use of 3D and also, the song "Fireworks" by Katy Perry really mixed well with that circus scene.
The slapstick humor is well done and it's a nice reference to the old-school Tom And Jerry cartoons, as more insane but hilarious stuff keeps throwing in at you with no break on stopping and the best thing about it is this: They do not add in bullshit pee or poop jokes, they add in fast spaced and creative humor in Madagascar 3, so that it never feels forced or mediocre. The cast did a great job, Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer and Jada Pinkett Smith were all fun in their roles, as well as Sacha Baron Cohen, Cedric The Entertainer, Chris Miller and John DiMaggio, but Frances McDormand was absolutely perfect and insane as the main villain and this will be my favorite performances of a cartoon villain ever.
Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted is the movie that proves that 3D is amazing, if used the right way and doesn't even need to be a gimmick if you treat 3D like a gimmick. I mean, enough with the same "3D sucks" nonsense already cause there's a lot of good 3D films coming out and yes, I understand that studios like Paramount are using 3D as a quick cash grab for the audiences (like the GI Joe 2 movie 3D conversion) but here's the thing guys: Stop thinking that 3D is bad and just give the 3D movies a chance.
I know I have.
Anyway, Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted is an extremely funny and colorful experience that gives a much needed breath of fresh air to the Madagascar franchise and it makes you forget about the godawful Penguins Of Madagascar show on Nickelodeon.
