Formally, I believe it was the post-credit sequence of the first Iron Man movie that established "yes, there will be an Avengers movie". We all dreamed of the epic presence that film would bring since that day. Now it arrives not only with the best cast we could hope for, but with Joss Whedon in the director's chair. We should consider ourselves VERY lucky because this is the first time we have had the care and consideration put into a massive scale project like the Avengers. We had a lot riding on this, so did Hollywood. Mr. Whedon never loses sight of what's important...the characters. We have Iron Man, the Hulk, Thor, Black Widow, Captain America, and Hawkeye with Nick Fury et. al. on the big screen played masterfully by each respective actor/actress. It's a somewhat lengthy film, and its very action-oriented but that doesn't mean Whedon alienates the characters. There is a surprisingly careful touch with regard to backstory and personal touches when exploring each of the character's personal lives. Without giving anything away (and I'm sure most of you have seen this film already) it's definitely among the finest and best superhero movies ever made. The gripe I have with the film is that more characters could have been explored a little better and the story could have been slightly deeper. Those issues aside, I wouldn't change the film at all...even with those extremely minor flaws, you have to stand back and realize that this project was most likely executed in the best way possible given what Marvel had to work with. Bravo Mr. Whedon. I hope you continue to do comic adaptions in the future because the world needs a geek to do these movies justice.
