Box Office Beat Down: ‘Book of Secrets’ Reveals a $35 Million Secret!

Nicolas Cage had a very good Christmas this year. His first and only sequel National Treasure: Book of Secrets came in first over the Christmas holiday with another $35.6 million. This was the second weekend in a row that the Disney historical thriller topped the charts. It has pulled in a cumulative gross of $124 million, making it a certified hit.

But that wasn't the surprising news. The shocker was that Alvin and the Chipmunks remained in the second spot for a third straight week in a row, drawing in another $30 million. No one expected this film to be such a hit, and it doesn't look to be slowing down at all. So far, it has pulled in a total of $142 million in ticket sales. This is probably the biggest surprise hit of the year, and we will definitely be seeing a sequel sometime in the near future.

EXCLUSIVE: Justin Bartha Delivers a Powerful Side-Kick in ‘National Treasure: Book of Secrets’!

This was your first sequel. How hard was it to find this guy the second time around?

Justin Bartha: It wasn't hard to find him. The only difficult part was trying to find something new about him. I wanted to make him interesting again. I didn't want to do the same movie. I'd never been involved with a sequel. And obviously this movie was going to be about finding treasure again. I had to sit back and think, "Why would it be interesting?" So, basically, I tried to concentrate on what happened to this guy between the first and second movie. And how did he change during this time. That's what makes it interesting. I think he is a bit different. He grows through a bigger journey and a bigger change in this film. It is a lot different from the first movie.
