It isn't known whether the story will take place directly after Oz: The Great and Powerful, or if it will be closer to the events that take place in the 1939 Warner Bros. classic The Wizard of Oz. Our report from yesterday also revealed that the writer cannot use any elements of The Wizard of Oz that weren't in L. Frank Baum's original novel, such as Dorothy's ruby slippers. The novel itself, however, is in the public domain.

‘Oz: The Great and Powerful’ Sequel Moves Forward at Disney

Disney is already lining up a sequel to Oz: The Great and Powerful on the eve of its theatrical release tomorrow. Mitchell Kapner, who co-wrote the first screenplay with David Lindsay-Abaire, has been hired to pen the follow-up.

No story details have been released for the sequel, but there are a few things that the writer legally cannot include in the story. L. Frank Baum's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is in the public domain, which means the writer can use anything contained in that book. However, he cannot use any of the additions used by Warner Bros. in the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz, such as Dorothy's ruby slippers.
