After the huge success of The Curse of the Black Pearl, Walt Disney Studios decided to bring back Captain Jack Sparrow for another swash buckling epic adventure that's even more entertaining than the first.
Captain Jack Sparrow owes a debt to Davy Jones, who captains the Flying Dutchman with a crew from hell. Jack must find the heart of Davy Jones to save himself from eternal damnation and trapped in Davy Jones' Locker. With the help of quick-witted Will Turner and Elizabeth Swan they are forced again to join Captain Jack on his adventures.
Johnny Depp returns as the ever so unlucky Jack Sparrow and brings us once again another comedic performance as the lovable pirate. If you loved him in the first film, wait until you see his crazy antics in the sequel. Bringing more character depth to him this time, Depp really enjoys playing this character. Sure the actual story of Sparrow never progresses as it's just another "situation plot" same re-hashed idea from the first movie you feel as if he has to stop getting into these type of situations.
Also returning from the first film and continuing on their story are Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley. At the beginning of the film we see Will and Elizabeth about to be married, or so we think until Lord Cutler Beckett of pretentious jerk of the EIC who claims to have Turner hanged for his pirate antics from the first film but secretly wants Jones' heart to rule the oceans and rid the world of piracy. Savvy on that?
With that side plot out of the way, let's move onto the actual actors this time. Both Keira and Orlando bring back some kind of torn romance on screen as they are hopelessly never gonna get married. Reluctantly teaming up with Captain Jack to stop Davy Jones and prevent Lord Beckett of having Jones' heart the two tag along.
Orlando Bloom has turned his "pirate wannabe blacksmith" into a "swash-buckling hero" of a former blacksmith who know wants to follow in his fathers bootstraps to become a pirate. With the help of Bloom, Knightley is more fierce of a strong woman this time instead of being the one "trapped" to be rescued. She shows leadership and maturity but still has that innocent love for Turner. Also she really knows how to play Johnny Depp well too. The chemistry she has woth the two (Bloom and Depp) really sparks even more in this second film of the franchise. Naomie Harris makes a good addition to the cast as the elusive and mysterious Tia Dalma. Her back story is a good one and helps connect some plot holes from the film as well.
The main baddie besides "Lord Douchebag" is Davy Jones. Jones is played by the fantastic Bill Nighy (who's not the Science Guy). Using motion capture filming technology and mind blowing visual effects in the CGI department, they bring Davy Jones to life as this squid face menacing monster. Nighy does everything spot on perfect. From a convincing fearful voice and nasty movements this guy is one you should not mess with. Also, be on the look out for his terrifying pet Kraken.
With a somewhat easy to follow not overly complicated story and awesome special effects makes this epic movie hugely entertaining. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest is one you can watch over and over again! The actors from Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley and Bill Nighy do wonderful jobs at bringing these characters to life, the movie isn't over bloated but is a long one clocking in at 160 minutes but those 2 and half hours will fly by so fast you'll won't even know it. Altohugh the one small complaint that's an itty bitty one is that this movie isn't much of an original story that Curse of the Black Pearl was. Also, the ending is a cliff-hanger but things only wrap up in conclusion with the third film At World's End.
