SET VISIT: ‘Rock of Ages’! We head to Miami, Florida to visit the set of Rock of Ages I have visited dozens of movie sets over the past four and a half years - fantasies, action-thrillers, comedies, and dramas - but I've never stepped foot on the set of a musical until last August, when I found myself immersed in glam rock awesomeness on the Miami set of Rock of Ages. As I mentioned in my set visit preview a few weeks ago, director Adam Shankman and his crew transformed a few blocks of Miami into a fantastic, 1987 version of Hollywood's Sunset Strip for this adaptation of Chris D'Arienzo's Broadway stage play.

When I first arrived, we not only saw iconic Strip locales such as the Rainbow Room, Guitar Center, and Tower Records, but there were also a slew of 80s cars driving to the set. Among them were a Pontiac Fiero, Volkswagon Cabriolet, Chevy Monte Carlo, Datsun 280Z, Chevy Chevette and even a Dodge Reliant K (a.k.a. the K-Car). There was also a Shell gas station they used for the production, and it was said that when shooting wasn't taking place, several cars were seen pulling into the station, drawn to the $1.17 per gallon price on display.

SET VISIT PREVIEW: ‘Rock of Ages’! Check out the preview of our Rock of Ages set visit To my right, a massive billboard of Hollywood icon Angelyne looms over us all. Behind me, the Rainbow Room's iconic sign lights up the night. To my left, the Bourbon Room's massive facade stands out from the rest of the Sunset Strip, which lies straight ahead of us. While one might assume that I was standing on Hollywood's Sunset Boulevard, you'd both be right and wrong. I was actually in Miami, Florida, on the set of Warner Bros.' upcoming musical Rock of Ages, which hits theaters June 15. This sprawling set gave us an impressive glimpse into life on the Strip back in 1987.

For one, I am only 35 years old, and I have only lived in Hollywood since 2008, so this massive and incredible stretch of road, reconstructed with 1987-style buildings in downtown Miami, struck me as both familiar and unfamiliar at the same time. For instance, the huge Guitar Center on Sunset was present, but 80s staples like Tower Records, which doesn't exist on today's "Strip," was right next door. Of course, one of the other big changes was The Bourbon Room. The fictional club lies at the heart of this musical, which Chris D'Arienzo adapted from his own award-winning stage play.
