The original movie did spawn an animated series entitled Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles, which only lasted one season. It remains to be seen if the movie or TV show will be based on Robert A. Heinlein's original novel, or when the story will be set. If they do decide to go the TV route, it's possible that Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller could still stay on board, since they have written for and produced sci-fi shows such as Fringe and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
Still, if they do venture into TV, that could mean that they may not have the budget required to bring these alien bugs to life in a way that fans have come to expect. In the original novel, these troopers used power suits to fight the alien scourge, which only appeared in Starship Troopers 3: Marauder, but a practical effect like that would likely be far too expensive for a TV series.
