‘The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy’ is a boxoffice nova

According to The Hollywood Reporter, what was thought by many in the industry to be a tight horse race between the two films debuting in wide release at the boxoffice this weekend turned into a rout instead. A sci-fi adventure-comedy about interplanetary hitchhiking, Buena Vista's The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, sizzled in the top spot with an estimated $21.7 million, while a high-octane action-thriller, Sony's XXX: State of the Union, fizzled in third place with an estimated $13.7 million.

The opening for Hitchhiker, from Spyglass Entertainment and Touchstone Pictures, proved to be a company best in April for the Disney distribution arm and also was the highest-grossing debut for a PG-rated film for the month. Buena Vista's Holes previously held both those titles with $16.3 million. Martin Freeman stars in the Garth Jennings-directed Hitchhiker, which was based on the popular novel by Douglas Adams. The XXX sequel's dour debut -- relative to its industry-estimated $87 million cost -- was a far cry from the stellar $44.5 million opening of the original Revolution Studios picture, which starred Vin Diesel and Samuel L. Jackson. Ice Cube and Jackson star in the PG-13 sequel, which was helmed by Lee Tamahori.

Zooey Deschanel talks ‘Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy’

What if the world was destroyed by aliens and you were stuck with Zooey Deschanel as the only humans left alive. That's either a great sexual fantasy or the set-up for one of the most popular science fiction novels of all time. Zooey plays Trillian, the brainy but beautiful love interest of the hapless Arthur Dent (Martin Freeman). Zooey is well known for her work in independent films, but gained international fame as Will Ferrell's co-star in ‘Elf'. She continues the big-budget streak with her role in The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Zooey, unlike most of her co-stars, had read the book before getting the part. She's a genuine fan of Douglas Adams and was honored to be a part of the film.

Were you a big fan of the Douglas Adams books before signing onto the film?

Martin Freeman talks The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy’

British comedian Martin Freeman surprised everyone by landing the lead role of Arthur Dent in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. He's largely unknown in the U.S., but quite famous in Europe for his role in "The Office". His casting had a lot of people scratching their heads, but I'm pleased to report that he absolutely nails the film. Martin perfectly captures the confused "everyman" as Arthur Dent slogs his way around the galaxy. He's quite funny and puts a face on one of Sci-Fi's most beloved characters.

Sam Rockwell gets two-headed in ‘The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy’

Sam Rockwell returns to sci-fi six years after his hilarious role as Guy Fleegman in the vastly underrated Galaxy Quest. He plays Zaphod Beeblebrox, the two-headed, hard-partying President of the Galaxy in the film adaptation of Douglas Adams' classic novel, The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Sam puts on quite a show as Zaphod, mixing Elvis with Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and of all people, Vince Vaughn. It's a different take on the character, but die-hard fans should get a kick out of his performance.

Is Zaphod the opposite of Guy Fleegman, your character in Galaxy Quest?
