‘The Karate Kid 2’ Loses Director Breck Eisner

Just over two months after director Breck Eisner (The Crazies) signed on for Sony's The Karate Kid 2, the filmmaker has bowed out due to scheduling conflicts. The project has also gained two new writers in newcomers Jeremiah Friedman and Nick Palmer.

Our report from April revealed that The Karate Kid reboot stars Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan are reprising their roles for the sequel, although no story details have been released at this time, and it isn't known when production may get under way.

Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan Return for ‘Karate Kid 2’

Breck Eisner (The Crazies) has signed on to direct Sony's upcoming sequel The Karate Kid 2, which has Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan attached to reprise their roles from the 2010 reboot The Karate Kid.

We reported in August 2010 that writers Ethan Reiff and Cyrus Voris (Kung Fu Panda, Robin Hood) came aboard to write the script, with Zak Penn (The Incredible Hulk, X-Men: The Last Stand) signing on for a rewrite in February 2012. No story details have been released at this time.

‘The Karate Kid 2’ Gets Writer Zak Penn

Screenwriter Zak Penn (The Incredible Hulk) has been hired to rewrite the script for The Karate Kid 2. We first reported on the sequel back in August 2010, when writers Ethan Reiff and Cyrus Voris (Kung Fu Panda) were hired to write the sequel.

No plot details were given for the sequel, although it is believed that The Karate Kid stars Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan will reprise their roles. No deals are in place as of yet for both stars.

The update deviated from the 1984 original in that the latest story was set in China; a 1986 sequel saw the action go from the U.S. to Japan. The new sequel could try to keep the reversal going and seek to bring its cast to the U.S. Columbia would not reveal the setting or the plot for the new movie.
