Will Edgar Wright Direct ‘The Night Stalker’ with Johnny Depp?

Following director Edgar Wright's surprising departure from Marvel Studios' Ant-Man last week, many fans are wondering what the filmmaker will tackle next. It seems that Edgar Wright may be returning to a project he has been developing for over two years now, Disney's The Night Stalker, which has Johnny Depp attached to star.

We first reported on Edgar Wright's involvement back in February 2012, although we haven't heard anything else about the project since May 2012, when D.V. DeVincentis signed on to write the script, based on the 1974 TV series Kolchak: The Night Stalker. Darren McGavin starred in the series as Kolchak, a tabloid crime journalist who writes about cases involving supernatural subjects. The tone of the series seems to fit right within Edgar Wright's wheelhouse, offering playful humor with scary horror elements blended in. The script by D.V. DeVincentis is said to be in strong shape.

‘The Night Stalker’ Gets Writer D.V. DeVincentis

D.V. DeVincentis, known for his screenplays Grosse Pointe Blank and High Fidelity, has been hired to write The Night Stalker for director Edgar Wright and star Johnny Depp.

From Walt Disney Pictures, the movie is based on the cult ABC TV series of the same name that ran from 1974 to 1975. Johnny Depp will assume the role of Carl Kolchak, a character originally played by A Christmas Story's Old Man Darren McGavin. Kolchak works as a reporter for the Chicago-based independent News Service Stories, and deals mostly with supernatural subjects.

Edgar Wright to Direct Johnny Depp in ‘The Night Stalker’

Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World director Edgar Wright has signed on to direct The Night Stalker for Walt Disney Pictures and producer/star Johnny Depp.

The project was initially set up through Disney and Johnny Depp's Infinitum Nihil banner last summer. The thriller is based on a 1972 TV movie of the same name, which starred Darren McGavin as Carl Kolchak, a journalist who begins tracking a serial killer, only to discover the murderer is actually a vampire. The TV movie spawned the series Kolchak: The Night Stalker, which debuted in 1974. Johnny Depp will play Carl Kolchak, although no other cast members are attached yet.
