BOX OFFICE BEAT DOWN: ‘Inglourious Basterds’ Slays the Box Office Competition with $37.6 Million

Business was a-boomin for Quentin Tarantino's two-and-a-half-hour war film in its opening weekend. Inglourious Basterds had no trouble taking the top spot at the box office with an impressive $37.6 million estimated take in its opening weekend. The film was showing in 3,165 theaters and scored a hefty $11,881 per-screen average. The film earned just over half of its $70 million budget in its first weekend in theaters and, with the summer season winding down, it should do healthy business in the fall season.

Some holdovers showed some promising endurance this week as well, with District 9 taking second place with an estimated $18.9 million, dropping just 49% from last weekends tally, with a cumulative gross of $73.4 million after 10 days in theaters. G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and The Time Traveler's Wife showed its legs as well in third and fourth place with $12.5 million and $10.02 million respectively. Aside from the Basterds, though it wasn't the greatest weekend for the other new releases.

BOX OFFICE BEAT DOWN: ‘District 9’ Destroys Human Competition with $37 Million

With an amazing critical reception at its back, the humans and non-humans of District 9 ran roughshod over its box office competitors this week, taking in an estimated $37 million in its first weekend of release. Director Neill Blomkamp's $30 million film debut has already made its budget back in the first three days and it will be interesting to see if the film drops off much in its second weekend, with such great word-of-mouth and critical praise.

Last weekend's big winner had a pretty big drop-off in its second week in theaters. G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra took second place with an estimated $22.5 million, a 58.9% drop from last weekend's $56.2 million take. The Time Traveler's Wife, the film adaptation of Audrey Niffenegger's best-selling book, did solid biz in third place with $19.2 million, but the rest of the newcomers this week didn't fare that well at all.
