‘Winnie Mandela’ Acquired for Distribution by Image Entertainment

Image Entertainment, an RLJ Entertainment brand, has acquired all U.S. rights to Winnie Mandela at the 2013 Cannes International Film Festival. Budgeted at $15 million, the film is an adaptation of Anne Marie du Preez Bezdrob's biography Winnie Mandela: A Life and is written and directed by Darrell J. Roodt.

Winnie Mandela explores the personal and political life of the wife of renowned activist and former South African President, Nelson Mandela (Terrence Howard). The film tells the compelling story of one woman's journey as she fights for the freedom of the man she loves and for the freedom of her people during the Apartheid era. Winnie Mandela depicts the struggle to keep the Mandela dream alive amidst her husband's life imprisonment, her own time in solitary confinement, and her battle to overcome controversies that followed her through the years.

Wendy Crewson Set for ‘Winnie’ Biopic

http://movieweb.com/person/wendy-crewson/Wendy Crewson has boarded the biopic Winnie from Equinoxe Films, starring opposite Terrence Howard and Jennifer Hudson who portray Nelson and Winnie Mandela.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Crewson will play activist Mary Botha, who becomes a social worker in South Africa after witnessing a brutal police assault on a black youth. After befriending the Mandelas during the fight against apartheid, Botha is subjected to phone-tapping, police harassment and house arrest.

Terrence Howard to Play Nelson Mandela in ‘Winnie’

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Terrence Howard will star as South African leader Nelson Mandela in the new film Winnie, which is based off the life of Mandela's former wife, Winnie Mandela.

Hudson will play the title character in the film, which is based off the biography Winnie Mandela: A Life, written by Anne Marie du Preez Bezdrob. Darrell Roodt is directing the film, from an adaptation he co-wrote with Paul Ian Johnson and Andre Pieterse.
