The film series is a comedic take on the Fox television show created by Patrick Hasburgh and Stephen J. Cannell, which aired between 1987 and 1991. The series followed Johnny Depp and Peter DeLuise as young undercover cops that posed as high school students. The 2011 film and its sequel 22 Jump Street spoofed the premise of the series and were different in tone, leading to both critical and financial success. Hill and Tatum are set to reprise their roles for the upcoming 23 Jump Street.
