Two recent Hampshire College graduates (Chloe Sevigny and Kate Beckinsale) escape at night from their jobs as assistants in a publishing house to the most popular dance club of the moment during disco's last days in the very early 1980s. There they fall in with a group of slightly older guys (Chris Eigeman, MattKeeslar, Mackenzie Astin and Robert Sean Leonard) who were friends and antagonists at Harvard.
THE LAST DAYS OF DISCO is the last of a set of three romantic comedies by writerdirector Whit Stillman, linking the earlier "Metropolitan" ( 1990) with the chronologically later "Barcelona" (1994). Here the debate is between the virtues of group social life vs. "ferocious pairing off."
Chloe Sevigny ("Kids," "Trees Lounge") plays Alice, the nice girl to whom bad things happen - the worst being her friend Charlotte, played by Kate Beckinsale of "Cold Comfort Farm" and the upcoming Fox Searchlight film "Shooting Fish." Chris Eigeman, in his fourth collaboration with Stillman, plays Des. the club's underboss and lothario with Jennifer Beals, as Nina, one of his victims. Also in the cast are David Thornton, Matthew Ross, Tara Subkoff, and Jaid Barrymore.
The film's soundtrack features songs by Chic, Blondie, Evelyn "Champagne" King, the O'Jays and Carol Douglas (in the opening sequence. her disco classic "Doctor's Orders" merges with the score by Mark Suozo).
