When it comes to getting a new TV show off the ground, any production has its ups and downs, and sometimes they come at the same time. Mark Hudis, known for his work on HBO's hit vampire series True Blood, has just exited as Showrunner on the highly anticipated TV series adaptation of Lemony Snicket's a Series of Unfortunate Events. Coming to Netflix later this year, the bad news was met with good when Neil Patrick Harris was announced as the show's evil lead Count Olaf.

Count Olaf will be Neil Patrick Harris's first major TV role since leaving How I Met Your Mother in 2014, where he played bad boy Barney. His new character, originated by Jim Carrey in the 2004 big screen adaptation Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, will be quite the departure. At this time, no replacement has been named for Mark Hudis. Netflix is refusing to comment on either matter.

The Lemony Snicket's a Series of Unfortunate Events TV show is being produced in association with Paramount TV and Netflix. Author of the series, Daniel Handler, who writes under the pen name Lemony Snicket, is set to executive produce. No further casting has been announced at this time. The movie, which was from Paramount Pictures, also starred Liam Aiken, Emily Browning, Kara Hoffman, Shelby Hoffman, Jude Law, Timothy Spall, Catherine O'Hara, Billy Connolly and Meryl Streep.

Lemony Snicket's a Series of Unfortunate Events tells the story of three orphaned children. Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire are constantly battling their evil uncle Count Olaf, who is only out to inherit their family fortune. Brad Silberling, who directed the movie, has been asked to return to helm this new series. Though it isn't known if he's tackling all episodes or just the pilot.

Neil Patrick Harris was nominated for an Emmy in his role as Barney in How I Met Your Mother. The show ran for 200+ episodes over 9 seasons. Following the end of the show, he also hosted the short-lived NBC variety show Best Time Ever with Neil Patrick Harris. The actor will next be seen on the big screen in Downsizing starring opposite Matt Damon and Jason Sudeikis. That movie begins shooting this spring. Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events will get 13 episodes in its first season, but no premiere date has been announced.
