EXCLUSIVE: Will Chris Nolan Recast the Joker for Batman 3 or Will the Riddler Take His Place?

While conducting interviews with the cast of The Dark Knight this afternoon, I got a chance to chat with director Christopher Nolan and Gary Oldman about the proposed third segment of their supposed Batman trilogy. While none of us in attendance really wanted to dwell on the death of Heath Ledger, Oldman offered his thoughts on the actor's portrayal of the Joker, calling it the scariest on-screen performance he's ever seen.

He even went on to compare it to his own work as Sirius Black, saying, "Sirius Black might scare six year olds, but he doesn't scare nine year olds. It's hard to scare kids these days. Heath does. He scares everybody. This is one of the most frightening performances I have ever seen put on film." When asked if he thought they should recast Ledger for the third film, or just not include the character, Gary thought it was a good idea, "I don't see why not. I mean, they did it with Katie Holmes' character. I understand that this is a different circumstance, but I think another actor could do the job. I think Heath would want another actor to do the job."

Oldman then took a moment to think about it some more, "Maybe we don't need the Joker. Because we'll have The Riddler." Yes, Oldman alluded to the fact that The Riddler may in fact be the next on-screen Batman villain.

When I asked if he, himself, wanted to come back for a third segment, he smiled coyly, "We don't really know if Nolan is coming back." He then shook his head. "I guess I have to come back." He then put his hand to the side of his mouth as if to hide the next line from everybody, "Nolan will come back for a third one. I think we all have to." It is well known that Oldman tried to get out of appearing in The Dark Knight, but his contract wouldn't allow it.

Next, I asked Christopher Nolan if he wanted to come back for a third Batman film, and he said that he wasn't sure that he wanted to come back, "I don't know. I take my projects one at a time, and I am not thinking about that right now. I don't know if I want to come back." After that, I asked, "If you do choose to make a third Batman film, do you think that you would recast for the Joker? Or will he not appear in the film?"

Nolan's replay, "I don't know. I honestly have not taken a moment away from what is going on with the film now to even think about that. I don't know. I simply don't know."

The Dark Knight opens July 18th, 2008.

I just wanna say this as a viewer so don't go insulting my judgment or whatever. I'm not deeply knowledgeable about past batman stuff, but The Joker MADE The Dark Knight! Yeah it was a brilliant movie, but The Joker was so scary and enchanting that it made it so much more entertaining, I found myself secretly rooting for The Joker because I liked his character so damn much! And I seriously don't think that 'any old actor' can even get close to let alone equal Heath Ledger's performance - and I say that as someone who wasn't a big fan of his until I saw that performance. I personally don't think The Joker should be replaced both out of respect for Heath since he worked so hard for that role- besides he is remembered as The Joker; but also because I don't think that's what the public wants- I think the majority of the public will agree that The Joker is Heath Ledger's defining role and should not be touched, and also the public want to see other villains upgraded from their 'kiddie' level. I was looking forward to seeing Harley Quinn interacting with The Joker and so on, but that's obviously not gonna happen the way I'd like now- if it happens at all (Chris Nolan laughed at the prospect of her appearance in the movies). Part of me wants there to be more Batman movies, but now the possibility of that being it has arisen, another part is satisfied where it stands. Sorry for such a long comment! ^^'

scratch that I want to see Deadshot, Firefly, Harley Quinn, and Riddler. Maybe Cluemaster... But I look forward to Deadshot.

I don't think they should recast the Joker, just maybe decide what his fate should be in between movies. I say that out of respect for Heath Ledger. "TheJoker" you are full of it because, sure the character is great in the film, but if you didn't have an actor, who would have known that? Cher as Catwoman is the dumbest thing ever. No offense to the woman as an actress, but how would that look if you saw a poster of "Batman 3" and it said Cher write at the top. A little stupid. Is it just me or am I being a dick? Sure I said try Kate Beckinsale or Jessica Biel, but who am I kidding? Riddler, Deadshot, Penguin, and Harley Quinn I look forward to seeing in future Batman projects and possibly Hush, Cluemaster, or Firefly. Besides that I don't care.

but think of the experience Cher would have! lmao

I agree rad. To "TheJoker"-you didn't put a space in ur name cuz when u typed it in with a space it said that user name was already taken, right? Do u people have no honor?!?! Get original!!! The only people I've seen who deserve a joker name is "The Joker" and "Joker2010"

Shut up, knobie. Nobody's listening to you

Joker333, where'd you megan fox was going to play catwoman? She wouldn't be my first pic, but seeing as how i have a fascination with her, i'd take her over cher lmao

there is way to many people on here called joker!!

In my opinion they should the recast the joker - YES!!! For me and am sure other fans out there, the joker is what made the film so good, not the fact it was heath ledger(RIP) although may I add he did a great job, to me anyone could of done a great joker, BECAUSE this batman was so dark and the joker was more mature and alot more serious, for me it was the joker not who played him who made it for me, so I feel they need to bring him back for a 3rd, look at the sales of the film so far compared to batman begins, my opinion it was the joker who sold them it, not many people would of thought about heath ledger as the joker but played it well, but lets not look at the bigger picture, yes he did a great job BUT someone like johnny depp could fill his shoes and other great actors out there, because this joker is alot more darker and serious compared to maybe jack nicholsons joker, although again played amazingly was a bit camp and not very scary etc, you want a good batman listen to the fans and bring the joker back, other rivals like catwoman, penguin, mr freeze to me are just to comical and not taken very seriously, the riddler on the other hand could be like jigsaw in saw, where he leaves traps and riddles around obviously without the gore effect though that saw has, but leaves alot of explosives, traps, puzzles and leaving the audience what he'll do next, bring back the joker and if need be bring in the riddler, even like batman begins make a film on how the joker became who he is and set during batman begins or before it, to then introduce the joker back into the 3rd film, to make a top batman film, please bring the joker back, as they say the show must go on!!!

From what I heard from the movie channel. Johnny Depp is going to play the Riddler, Megan Fox is going to play Catwoman and Phillip Seymour Hoffman is going to play the Penguin. I still think he needs to fit in Cillian Murphy as the scarecrow. Christian Bale said if there is a third film then it will be the darkest so far because Chris Nolan pushes his actors really hard. I think only time will tell and I'm sure Chris Nolan will make everything work. Look I feared Heath Ledger as the Joker and Aaron Eckart as Two-Face when I heard it two years ago and Heath Ledger played probably the best villian ever since Robert De Niro in Cape fear. I think Chris Nolan will find away to make things work. From what I've heard from other web-sites he may turn the Riddler into a serial killer. Johnny Depp can do anything if he is pushed hard to achieve his characters needs. I know he can pull the Riddler off if he gets the role. He's got the right hair and he loves make up. Chris Nolan just needs to make his Villians sadistic looking and evil and we have a show. He really doesn't have to rush things because he just needs to create the next great story in the trilogy and get the right actors for the job. Nolan hasn't made a bad movie yet. I think Cher is just a teaser just like Mark Hamel from starwars was to play the Joker. Megan Fox or Angelina Jolie should be catwomen. They seem to have that darkness about them with that sexy glow. I think Phillip Seymour Hoffman would be a great Penguin because he is a A-plus actor and the man can act. I think he needs to do something like this anyway for his career and he should be the penguin. Its all in Nolan's hands and I'm excited to see where he goes with all of this. I'm sure from BB and TDK cast that he will find the right cast for Batman 3. I wouldn't be shocked to see Bain somewhere in the next movie.

Star Wars are classic films. Does Star Wars have an article people can comment on? No. Stupid ass.

Radimus, yeah she wouldn't be my first choice and it is abit of a shock, but i have faith he's going to make it work. Adding to this rumour is that he wants to portray her as a washed up vamp at the end of her criminal career, either that or he's looking to improve on his gay demographic audience, who knows his thinking lol

Hey. TDK is a great movie. SLIM, can you believe people are still interested in Star fucking Wars. Nope. But they are. Or even WW2 movies. But they are. I can talk all I want about TDK, when it is long gone.
As for Rad's comment, I think he's tellin the truth, and however weird it is, I trust Chris Nolan.

I can't believe this is still getting comments after the hype of TDK is long gone

thats very true "whocares"..... it's not the fact i'm questioning the guys judgement (we don't even know if this is true yet, it did come from a newspaper) it has just come as a bit of a shock!

August 26th, 2008 2:17pm
If Chris Nolan Thinks Cher is perfect for his vision of Catwoman...so be it. Didn't we go through all this shit when Heath Ledger was cast as the joker, with everyone crying about it. I'm not really worried who he chooses, he knows better than anyone what he wants to do.

August 26th, 2008 6:09am
i mean "PISS,i though this was... ".:P

August 25th, 2008 1:06pm
actually i'm not fucking with you, as silly and stupid as i am... not even "I" could have thought of putting Cher as Catwoman! this is what was written in the paper, word for word!

no shit!
