Obi-Wan Kenobi sees Ewan McGregor return to the Star Wars franchise after almost two decades as the Jedi master, and while the show is intended to be a limited series that bridges a gap between the prequel movies and the original Star Wars trilogy there is a possibility that there could be a second season. While the new series was originally envisioned as a movie that would have potentially followed Solo: A Star Wars Story, the continuation of Kenobi’s tale stalled when that movie didn’t perform quite as well as expected and fans began to wonder if they would ever see McGregor reprise his role.

Now Obi-Wan Kenobi will premiere on Disney+ on May 25th, exactly 45 years since Star Wars debuted in cinemas, and will join Obi-Wan ten years after the events of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. As the Empire attempts to eradicate the Jedi Order from the universe, Kenobi hides on Tatooine as he watches over future Jedi, Luke Skywalker. During the series Kenobi will be brought back into a fight for survival as he faces the Inquisitors, and once more confronts his former pupil Anakin Skywalker, who is now at the peak of his power in the guise of Darth Vader.

While series director Deborah Chow has claimed that the show was written with the idea of being a story “with a beginning, middle and end”, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has revealed that discussions have been had about returning to the Obi-Wan Kenobi story again in the future. In an interview with EW, she said:

"It's certainly something we talk about, mainly because everybody came together and had such an incredible time. Ewan had an incredible time. Hayden had an incredible time. So certainly from that point of view, everybody involved would love to see this not end. But we have to really spend our time asking the question: Why would we do it? If we were to decide to do anything more with the Obi-Wan character, we'd have to really answer the question why?"

Many Disney+ Star Wars and Marvel Shows Keep Their Stories Tight As Limited Series

Star-Wars-Disney-Plus

Obi-Wan Kenobi as a limited series has an exact purpose to achieve, just like an episodic movie with a definite climax and ending. So far, Disney have used the limited series format to tell specific stories that fit into their universes, and very few in both the Marvel and Star Wars canons have expanded into a full multi-season series, having chosen to keep their storytelling tight and linear.

When it comes to Obi-Wan Kenobi, the six episodes are not expected to end on a cliffhanger of any kind, especially as the show has clearly been conceived as a single chapter in the overall Star Wars saga. If there are more stories to be told about Obi-Wan, then fans of the franchise will be more than happy to accept them, but as Kennedy hinted, it is all about whether there is a story worth telling. With the new series already set to pit Kenobi against Darth Vader, there is probably nothing else that Star Wars fans really want to see, so would a second season not risk treading similar ground.
