Oblivion Cancels Early IMAX Release
Universal Pictures had originally planned on rolling out the sci-fi thriller Oblivion for an advanced run in IMAX theaters April 12, ahead of its nationwide release on April 19. Today, the studio has scrapped those plans, with the upcoming film starring Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman opening in both standard and IMAX formats April 19.
The move was made for a few different reasons. One is that the studio wants to capitalize on opening against just one other movie on the 19th, Open Road Films' jOBS, instead of going against 42 and Scary Movie 5 on the 12th. The shift also gives Universal's Jurassic Park 3D, opening April 5, an extra week on the IMAX screens.
Tom Cruise stars in Oblivion as Jack Harper, one of the last men on Earth who repairs the drones that collect natural resources on the toxic planet. He must question everything he knows to be true about the planet when he encounters a crash-landed pilot (Olga Kurylenko) and the leader of a mysterious underground settlement (Morgan Freeman).
