Oscar-winning actress Octavia Spencer has signed on to star in Lionsgate's Divergent sequel, Insurgent.

The actress will portray Johanna, the leader of the Amity faction, which is dedicated to peacefulness, kindness, forgiveness, trust, self-sufficiency, and neutrality. Shailene Woodley is returning as Tris Prior, along with Theo James as Tris' love interest Four and Kate Winslet as Jeanine, the leader of the Erudite (intelligence) faction.

Robert Schwentke is directing from a screenplay by Brian Duffield (Jane Got a Gun) and Akiva Goldsman (Winter's Tale), adapted from the novel by Veronica Roth. Douglas Wick, Lucy Fisher and Pouya Shabazian are producing, although it isn't known when production may begin. Lionsgate has already handed out a March 20, 2015 release date for Insurgent.

Octavia Spencer will next be seen in Snowpiercer and Get on Up. She also signed on to star in the comedy Las Madres earlier this week, alongside Leslie Mann.

Divergent has earned over $250 million worldwide since its release on March. Lionsgate also claims that the book sales have surged to over 22 million copies sold worldwide, up from 17 million at the time of the movie's release.
