Paramount Pictures made a surprising change to its release slate today, pushing Paranormal Activity 5 from its October 25, 2013 release date to January 3, 2014.

The sequel will now face off with Fox's horror-thriller Devil's Due in the first weekend of January. No reason was given for the release date switch, but it's possible that the studio wants to exploit the early January success of last year's thriller The Devil Inside. This will be the first October since the Paranormal Activity franchise launched in 2009 that a sequel won't be in theaters.

Our first and only story on this sequel was back in November, when Paramount confirmed the October 25, 2013 release date it was just bumped out of. The studio has not revealed a writer, director or cast members as of yet, and, of course, no story details were given.

That report from November also revealed that Paramount was planning a Latino-themed spin-off, set for release sometime in 2013, but it seems likely that isn't happening until next year as well.
