‘The Equalizer 2’ Gets Fall 2017 Release Date

Sony Pictures has handed out a September 29, 2017 release date for their action sequel The Equalizer 2, which has Denzel Washington set to return as McCall. The studio confirmed that Denzel Washington will return as Robert McCall at CinemaCon back in April, with the project serving as the actor's first ever sequel in his storied career. As of now, The Equalizer 2 doesn't have any direct competition on September 29, 2017, but it does come one week after Warner Bros.' Ninjago, a spinoff of The Lego Movie, and an untitled Sony Pictures Animation movie.

The Equalizer is based on the 1980s TV series of the same name, following McCall (Denzel Washington), a former black ops commando who has faked his death to live a quiet life in Boston. After coming out of his exile to help save a young prostitute Teri (Chloe Moretz), he finds himself in a war with deadly Russian gangsters. Marton Csokas, David Harbour, Haley Bennett, Bill Pullman and Melissa Leo also starred in the remake, but it isn't known if any of those cast members will be back for the follow-up.

Even before The Equalizer arrived in theaters everywhere last September, Sony had plans for a sequel. During Sony Pictures big presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas yesterday, they confirmed that The Equalizer 2 has been greenlit, and that a second movie staring Denzel Washington is officially moving forward. It was always Sony's intention to build a franchise vehicle for Denzel Washington, and pre-production unofficially started on the movie in February of 2014 with Richard Wenk brought into write the screenplay.

In last year's The Equalizer, Denzel Washington starred as Robert McCall, a man of mysterious origin who believes he has put the past behind him, dedicates himself to creating a quiet new life. However, when he meets Teri (Chloe Moretz), a teenager who has been manhandled by violent Russian mobsters, he simply cannot walk away. With his set of formidable skills, McCall comes out of self-imposed retirement and emerges as an avenging angel, ready to take down anyone who brutalizes the helpless. The film was based on a popular 80s TV show of the same name starring Edward Woodward as the title character.

When Slavi refuses to accept the deal, McCall springs into action, although he falls quite short of his "15 second" goal for neutralizing these treacherous bad guys.
