There has been a strong outcry from audiences and filmmakers alike across gender divides, demanding more female participation in every aspect of the filmmaking process. Sony Pictures has brought on screenwriter Diablo Cody to rewrite the screenplay for their live action Barbie movie. The project was first announced in April 2014, when the studio hired Jenny Bicks to write the script. Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald are producing, with former Sony executive Amy Pascal coming aboard to produce as well.
Julia Pistor is executive producing for Mattel's Playground Productions. Our report from April 2014 revealed that the story would center on Barbie using her personal and professional skills to help others, but it isn't known if this story approach will still be used with Diablo Cody now on board. That report also stated that Sony plans on casting young stars as Barbie and Ken, while putting A-list stars around them in supporting roles. Academy Award winner Diablo Cody will make her feature directorial debut from her original screenplay. Mason Novick ((500) Days of Summer) will produce. Mandate president Nathan Kahane (50/50) will executive produce alongside Diablo Cody. Nicole Brown, EVP of Production, is overseeing the project on behalf of Mandate Pictures. The project is on a fast track for a spring production start. Lionsgate is handling international sales and will present the film as part of their upcoming American Film Market slate.

Tapert and Bruce Campbell (who also starred in the original franchise) are gearing up to remake their cult sensation The Evil Dead through their long standing Ghost House Pictures partnership. Sam Raimi and Robert G. Tapert were such instant fans of Federico Alvarez's short film "Panic Attack!" that they set up a blind deal with the filmmaker and through that process have attached Federico Alvarez to write and direct the film. Federico Alvarez wrote the script with Rodolfo Sayagues. Academy Award® winning screenwriter Diablo Cody is currently doing revisions on the draft. Ghost House is committed to renewing the franchise and has the film on the fast track.
