Gus Van Sant Will Direct Anime Adaptation ‘Death Note’

Gus Van Sant has signed on to direct an adaptation of the Japanese manga Death Note, which has been languishing in development at Warner Bros. for several years now.

Back in January 2011, Shane Black signed on to direct from a script by Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry, but we never heard anything else about the project until now. The Tracking Board reports that the most recent script was written by Shane Black, Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry, and that Shane Black was still attached to direct up until 2013, which is, coincidentally, when his blockbuster Iron Man 3 hit theaters.

Focus Features is excited to introduce the characters from Promised Land with a new set of seven hi-res photos! Check out Matt Damon, John Krasinski, Frances McDormand, Rosemarie DeWitt, Scoot McNairy, Titus Welliver & Hal Holbrook from the upcoming Gus Van Sant directed drama opening in select theatres on December 28th, 2012, before opening nationwide January 4th, 2013!

Promised Land is the new contemporary drama directed by Gus Van Sant. Matt Damon plays Steve Butler, an ace corporate salesman who is sent along with his partner, Sue Thomason (Frances McDormand), to close a key rural town in his company's expansion plans. With the town having been hit hard by the economic decline of recent years, the two outsiders see the local citizens as likely to accept their company's offer, for drilling rights to their properties, as much-needed relief. What seems like an easy job for the duo becomes complicated by the objection of a respected schoolteacher (Hal Holbrook) with support from a grassroots campaign led by another man (John Krasinski), as well as the interest of a local woman (Rosemarie DeWitt). Promised Land explores America at the crossroads where big business and the strength of small-town community converge.

‘The Promised Land’ Gets Gus Van Sant

The film is a Capraesque tale in which the actors play rival corporate executives. Matt Damon plays a sales executive who arrives in a small town only to have his whole life called into question. Matt Damon was originally directing the project, instead he will write the screenplay alongside John Krasinski. They will be rewriting a draft by Dave Eggers.

Taylor Lautner and Gus Van Sant Team for Indie

Twilight's Taylor Lautner is teaming up with arthouse film director Gus Van Sant on a small-budget film based on a nonfiction article in The New Yorker magazine that the actor has optioned through his Quick Six production shingle he runs with father Dan Lautner.

No plot details are known for the Gus Van Sant-directed project, which will film early next year.
