Here's Why Joss Whedon Is Done with Marvel Movies

The director was replaced by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo for Avengers: Infinity War Part I and Avengers: Infinity War - Part II. Many fans were hoping that he would eventually come back at some point in Marvel Phase Three or Marvel Phase Four, but it doesn't seem that will happen now. The news isn't terribly surprising, though, since Joss Whedon revealed shortly after Avengers: Age of Ultron's release that the sequel "broke" him.

As you may recall, right after principal photography wrapped on Marvel's The Avengers, the director shot an indie black and white adaptation of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing, which was released in 2013. The filmmaker revealed that the producers even joked that he should make another Shakespeare adaptation over a 'long weekend,' in hopes of getting him in a better mood after shooting Avengers: Age of Ultron.

‘Avengers’ Made Joss Whedon Less Money Than ‘Dr. Horrible’

‘Avengers’ Made Joss Whedon Less Money Than ‘Dr. Horrible’

While under Marvel Entertainment CEO Isaac Perlmutter, Marvel Studios became notorious for it's penny pinching ways. But how far did they go to save a buck? According to Joss Whedon, he's made more money from his internet musical Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog than he did from directing the first Marvel's The Avengers. He disclosed this information during this past Saturday night's Dr. Horrible reunion. But is what he says true?

Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog was an independently financed project that he put together back in 2008, and it has been a cult hit ever since with a strong army of fans. Whedon noted that writing and directing Marvel's The Avengers netted him far less than the 45-minute video starring Neil Patrick Harris as the title character. The actor joined the director, along with Felicia Day and Nathan Fillion to celebrate the 7 year anniversary of Dr. Horrible, which kicked off Paleyfest NY at the Paley Center for Media.

‘Star Wars’ Boba Fett Movie Wants Director Joss Whedon?

‘Star Wars’ Boba Fett Movie Wants Director Joss Whedon?

Now that Joss Whedon's Avengers: Age of Ultron is in theaters, the director is essentially parting ways with Marvel, with the filmmaker recently expressing his desire to start writing his own new material. While he doesn't have any confirmed projects in the works, a new report claims that Disney and LucasFilm are courting him to direct one of the Star Wars Anthology movies. Gareth Edwards is directing the first spinoff, Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One, which starts production this summer and hits theaters next December, but it's possible that Joss Whedon could be courted for the Star Wars Anthology: Boba Fett Movie, which Josh Trank recently backed out of.

It's worth noting that this rumor originated at the Get Your Geek On Podcast, where the host admitted to creating this rumor as a joke, to see how quickly a story like this would spread across the Internet. However, various sites are reporting that "something" is happening with LucasFilm and Joss Whedon, but what that "something" is remains a mystery. Still, no talks or discussions have been confirmed by either Joss Whedon or Disney/LucasFilm, so we'll just have to wait and see if it turns out to be true or not. There is even speculation that the director deactivated his Twitter profile as a "smokescreen" so he could secretly engage in talks with the Star Wars team.

‘Avengers 2’: Whedon Talks Battle with Marvel Over Final Cut

Avengers: Age of Ultron director Joss Whedon has previously hinted about his battles with Marvel leading up to the release of this Phase Two sequel. While we don't know if he will ever direct an MCU movie again, he certainly doesn't have one planned, with Captain America: Civil War directors Anthony Russo and Joe Russo taking the helm for Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 and Avengers: Infinity War Part 2. Joss Whedon recently spoke in detail about his struggles with Marvel on the Empire Film Podcast. If you haven't seen Avengers: Age of Ultron yet, there will be SPOILERS below, so read on at your own risk.

In related news, Joss Whedon deactivated his Twitter account yesterday, and while no official reason was given, there is speculation that it may have been over numerous death threats the director received after Avengers: Age of Ultron's release. Of course, it's possible he could have just shut down his account now that his publicity responsibilities for Avengers: Age of Ultron are through. The director previously quit Twitter after promotional duties for his 2013 indie Much Ado About Nothing were complete, so it's certainly feasible that he has quit again for the same reason.
