The sequel had been in development for several years, but a report from August claimed that Will Smith hasn't signed on yet, and while he may still produce the sequel, there was no guarantee that he would come back to star. While it still isn't known if both Will Smith and Martin Lawrence have officially signed on quite yet, this long-awaited sequel is closer to happening now than it has ever been in the past decade. It isn't known if any other franchise stars such as Gabrielle Union, Theresa Randle and Joe Pantoliano will come back at this time.
Another big question mark for Bad Boys 3 is whether or not Michael Bay will be involved in any way. 1995's Bad Boys marked the filmmaker's directorial debut, and he came back eight years later to direct the follow-up Bad Boys II as well. Michael Bay's career has certainly skyrocketed since then, directing the lucrative Transformers franchise, and, most recently, his war drama 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, which debuted last month. Sony Pictures announced a slew of release dates for projects that have been previously announced, and some that are just being revealed. Among these new release dates are the long-awaited Bad Boys 3, set for release on February 17, 2017, and another sequel, Bad Boys 4, arriving on July 3, 2019. In total, the studio set release dates for 16 movies between 2016 and 2019, which represent big franchise movies like these sequels and brand new projects as well.
Bad Boys 3 will go up against the final Maze Runner movie, The Maze Runner: The Death Cure on February 17, 2017. It also comes a week after three more high-profile projects, Universal's Fifty Shades Darker, 20th Century Fox's The Mountain Between Us and Warner Bros.' The LEGO Batman Movie.
