Tom Clancy, the best-selling author who created classic characters such as Jack Ryan, passed away at the age of 66 yesterday in a Baltimore, Maryland hospital. Ivan Held, the president of the author's publishing house, G.P. Putnam's Sons, confirmed his passing, although a cause of death was not released at this time.
Tom Clancy was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1947, and was obsessed with naval history at a very young age, spending his childhood reading books and journals intended for much older readers. He graduated from Loyola College in Baltimore in 1969 with a degree in English, and although he wanted to join the armed forces, he couldn't qualify for enlistment because he is nearsighted. Ubisoft is in talks with Paramount to develop a big screen adaptation of their best selling video game, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell. Warner Bros. briefly eyed the project, but quickly lost interest.
The stealth action games follow covert operative Sam Fisher, who is part of a top-secret branch of the National Security Agency called the Third Echelon.
