Legendary Pictures has hired screenwriter Travis Beacham to pen Pacific Rim 2, a follow-up to director Guillermo del Toro's upcoming Pacific Rim.

Travis Beacham wrote the original screenplay for Pacific Rim, which won't be in theaters until July of this coming year. Despite the release being more than six months away, Legendary Pictures is already prepping the sequel.

The film will be set in a future that finds Earth under attack from a group of malicious beasties. In an effort to rally the One World Order, all the governments of the world must come together to stop this threat using highly advanced technology. At this time, Beacham has only written a very detailed twenty-five page treatment. But the film is already being readied as a summer event film by Legendary.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, director Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted) is in talks with producers to direct the big-budget adaptation, although nothing has been set.
