‘Annie’ Loses Willow Smith; Gains Director Will Gluck

Sony Pictures Entertainment has announced this morning that they are in negotiations with Will Gluck to direct a broad-based re-imagining of the classic Broadway musical Annie, it was announced today by Doug Belgrad, president of Columbia Pictures, and Hannah Minghella, president of Production for the studio.

The film will be produced by James Lassiter, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Will Smith through their Overbrook Entertainment banner, and by Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter, Jay Brown, and Tyran Smith through Marcy Media. Gluck will revise the film's screenplay, which was written by Emma Thompson and rewritten by Aline Brosh McKenna based on the musical stage play Annie, book by Thomas Meehan, music by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Martin Charnin, and on Little Orphan Annie. The film will be set in the modern day. The studio is anticipating a late fall start and is eyeing a 2014 release date.

Ryan Murphy No Longer Looking to Direct ‘Annie’

Star Willow Smith and her producer/dad Will Smith had originally wanted Eat, Pray, Love director and Glee creator Ryan Murphy to http://movieweb.com/annie-wants-ryan-murphy-to-direct/direct their big screen reboot of the classic musical Annie, which is itself based on a comic strip. That is no longer happening.

Ryan Murphy has dropped out of contention to direct, with no reason given at this time. The director simply broke away from the project with no comment. It is unclear if there was a problem between the producers and Ryan Murphy, but his decision to leave may have been over creative differences and the direction this new Annie was headed.

‘Annie’ Remake Coming Starring Willow Smith

Overbrook Entertainment partners James Lassiter, Ken Stovitz, Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith have formed a joint venture with Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter to develop and produce major motion pictures. One of the projects being discussed is the re-imagination of the classic Broadway musical Annie as a vehicle for Willow Smith to star. The film will be developed with Sony Pictures Entertainment and produced by Overbrook Entertainment and Mr. Carter.

The partnership began over dinner with Jada, Will, James Lassiter and Jay-Z, where they decided to co-invest in the now successful beauty products line Carol's Daughter. They continued this partnership as co-producers of the successful Broadway production Fela!, which earned a total of eleven Tony Award nominations in 2010.
