Point Break remains one of the best action movies of the 90s, and now, writer W. Peter Iliff has teased a return to the surf, revealing his proposed plans for a sequel series which would reveal what happened to Keanu Reeves' FBI Agent Johnny Utah. Iliff has offered a few details regarding the Point Break 2 show, including that it would be led by Utah's daughter, and that since the events of the first movie, Johnny has been mysteriously missing...

"Johnny Utah has been missing. His body's not been found. He's [been reported] dead for years. There's a mystery around where he is, and you're going to find out - he's not dead. There's a bigger story that evolves around that, while she gets involved in this eco-terrorist movement, which of course is now a big thing."

Directed by Kathryn Bigelow, Point Break stars Patrick Swayze, Keanu Reeves, Lori Petty and Gary Busey, and features Reeves as an undercover FBI agent who is tasked with investigating the identities of a group of bank robbers while developing a complex relationship with the group's charismatic leader. The movie is still considered to be one of Reeves' best, with Johnny Utah walking away from his FBI job and into the unknown come the movie's end.

Indeed, it sounds like the mystery of Johnny Utah's whereabouts would provide the backbone of the series, with Utah's daughter getting into adventures of her own along the way. Iliff went on to reveal a few more details about the script and central character, with Utah's daughter being a former Olympic snowboarder who is driven into retirement after an injury ends her dream. She decides to follow in her father's footsteps, becoming an FBI agent and going undercover amongst an eco-terrorist group. She certainly sounds like a chip off the old block, possessing the same desire for an adrenaline spike as her dad.

Sadly, while this all sounds like a perfectly logical, and even exciting continuation for fans of the original Point Break, Iliff had some disappointing news, stating that he doubted the series would ever happen, and that, even if it did, Keanu Reeves would be unlikely to return in a starring role.

"They made an offer to Keanu to executive produce this television series - not to star in it, just to executive produce. But Keanu's busy... he's a busy man, so we can't get his commitment, so I can't get Alcon [Entertainment] to do this."

Keanu Reeves is indeed very busy right now, and is in fact bringing back several of his other beloved characters for highly anticipated sequels. First up is the surprise fourth installment in The Matrix franchise, The Matrix Resurrections, which finds the actor as humanity's saviour once again. Set twenty years after the events of The Matrix Revolutions, Neo is now living a seemingly ordinary life as Thomas A. Anderson in San Francisco. While he does not remember his previous life, a chance meeting with Trinity will reignite his destiny and reopen his mind to the world of The Matrix. The Matrix Resurrections is scheduled to be released theatrically on December 22, 2021, and will also stream digitally on HBO Max for a month beginning on that same date.

Reeves will also return to the role of master assassin John Wick in John Wick: Chapter 4, which is due for release on May 27, 2022. This comes to us courtesy of Slash Film.
