Mike White has officially landed the Pride and Prejudice and Zombies directing gig. As we reported last week, White, the screenwriter behind School of Rock, has been the top contender for over a month now, ever since David O. Russell left the project in October. Deadline announced the official news today, stating that White received an offer to direct on November 5th.
Seth Grahame-Smith's book reimagines Jane Austen's seminal classic, pitting Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy against the living dead in what will be a big screen adaptation mixing romance, horror, and comedic elements. Casting is now underway on the project, with Natalie Portman having abandoned Pride and Prejudice and Zombies many months ago. In her absence, David O. Russell had hoped to lockdown Scarlett Johansson for the lead role of Elizabeth, with Bradley Cooper playing Mr. Darcy.
It is highly unlikely, though not entirely impossible, that both actors will still join the thriller. At this time, Scarlett Johansson is in contention for quite a number of other high profile projects lining up, and it is unclear which one she will take on.
An official casting announcement is expected soon, as principle photography is gearing up to start in the very near future.
