Spectre is still playing in some select theaters, and will be coming to Blu-ray and DVD in the New Year. While the film was a hit with fans and critics alike, its opening theme song got mixed reactions, to say the least. The title track from Sam Smith was called 'Writing's on the Wall'. But it wasn't the only song the filmmakers considered for James Bond's 24th adventure. Radiohead actually created a true Spectre theme song. And now they're letting their fans hear it for the first time in the spirit of the holiday season.

Sam Smith's 'Writing on the Wall' was accused of being 'too dull' by longtime fans who were overwhelming disappointed by the soulful track. For the most part, it sounds like a 007 ballad, and it has plenty crescendo, but some listeners just didn't feel that it led anywhere. There seemed to be something missing. Truth be told, some hardcore fans absolutely hated it.

Does Radiohead capture and convey the notion of what a 007 theme song should be a little better than Sam Smith? That will be for the individual user to figure out and decide. The track is available for listen right now courtesy of SoundCloud. Here's what Radiohead had to say about the track.

"Last year we were asked to write a theme tune for the Bond movie Spectre. Yes we were. It didn't work out, but became something of our own, which we love very much. As the year closes we thought you might like to hear it. Merry Christmas. May the force be with you."

Many speculate that Radiohead producer Nigel Goodrich is responsible for that accompanying note. He was recently revealed to have a cameo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens as a Stormtrooper, and that would reveal the tag at the end of the quote. Also of note, Daniel Craig also plays a Stormtrooper in the sci-fi sequel.

Spectre is still playing in 375 theaters this Christmas weekend. So if you want to load this up on your phone and go watch the movie with this playing in your headphones as opening credits role, you can get a sense of how the movie's tone may have been slightly affected. Probably not much. We're still not sure if Daniel Craig is going to return to play 007 in the future. But even if he doesn't, perhaps the next James Bond movie will get a true Radiohead theme song, and not just a rejected one that serves as a cruel reminder of what could have been. Take this song for a spin and let us know who did it better.
