Regé-Jean Page may have gotten his big break on Netflix's Bridgerton, but the English actor doesn't care if his role is recast. Page, who played royal heartthrob Simon Basset (aka the Duke of Hastings), told Variety's Marc Malkin that the showrunners are "free to do as they like."

"Shonda and I had a wonderful conversation at the end of Season 1. We were quite happy with how we stuck the landing on that one," Page said, referring to Bridgerton's executive producer Shonda Rhimes.

"We did so well on that redemptive arc that people forget Simon was kind of horrific. He was the best example of a Regency fuckboy that any of us had come across," Page continued, acknowledging viewers' reactions on Simon Basset, the initially callous suitor of Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor). "And so, because we came around full circle so well, because we stuck that landing, you're left with this great feeling. You really do have to be brave about ending stories like that."

Page also says that he hasn't watched the second season of the Regency-era romance, telling Variety, "I haven't caught up with it."

Understandably, of course — since his breakout role in Bridgerton's first season, Page has been exploring new opportunities, acting in films, TV shows, and even becoming the face of men's luxury fragrance Armani Code.

His most recent role is another Netflix venture; Page will star alongside Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans in upcoming spy thriller The Gray Man.

"I try to take all the things I like about myself—everything that you got from those self-esteem classes as a kid—put it in a box, tie up a bow and just hide it" Page said of playing a villain in The Gray Man. "It's a delight. Hopefully you plug into the relish that the audience will have going there with you."

The Grey Man hits Netflix July 22.

The Duke of Hastings Might Return Yet

Rege-Jean Page

Although the Duke of Hastings would not be the first recast in the Bridgerton series—it was recently announced that Hannah Dodd would be taking over the role of Francesca Bridgerton from Ruby Stokes for the show's third season—the show hasn't taken that step yet.

In fact, as recently as last month, Page was allegedly in talks to reprise his Bridgerton role. A source told The Sun in June:

"Regé-Jean was always very open about his intention to quit the show after the first season and to move on to other projects. But recently, there has been a dialogue between him and the show's bosses. Nothing has been formally agreed yet but watch this space. Things are very up in the air at the moment, but this will be an exciting year for Regé, without a doubt."
