Tattoos are possibly the worst wager in any bet, as Tom Hardy learned the hard way after shooting last year's acclaimed wilderness drama The Revenant. Either not feeling too sure about his work, or how the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences would respond, Hardy bet against himself getting an Oscar nomination while shooting on set. And he lost in the worst possible way.

Anyone following the behind-the-scenes ordeals associated with director Alejandro G. Inarritu's 2015 opus The Revenant knows that it was a grueling shoot that took its toll on all involved. Both Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy were well-rewarded for their hardships endured in the freezing weather. And let's not forget that DiCaprio had to tussle with a real live bear. DiCaprio even nabbed his first well-deserved Oscar, which was a long time coming.

But Tom Hardy isn't so lucky. He's getting what has been described as a 'shitty' tattoo. One that is personally had written by Leonard himself, who has extraordinarily bad handwritting.

This bet was just revealed in the latest issue of Esquire, where Hardy tells of the wager made on the ice cold set. Leonard, after watching Tom Hardy work, was convinced his younger co-star was going to nab a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his performance as John Fitzgerald. Tom Hardy, on the other hand, strongly disagreed. Taking their gentlemanly disagreement to more barbaric levels, Hardy bet DiCaprio that the loser would have to get a tattoo of the other's choosing.

Leonardo DiCaprio won the bet, with Tom Hardy getting the Oscar nomination after all. DiCaprio chose a tattoo that reads, 'Leo Knows Everything'. Which he hand-wrote himself for use in getting the permanent ink placed somewhere on Hardy's body. Tom explains.

"[DiCaprio] wrote, in this really shitty handwriting: 'Leo knows everything,' Ha! I was like, 'OK, I'll get it done, but you have to write it properly. I haven't got [the tattoo] yet. Because it sucks."

That said, Tom Hardy does believe he'll eventually be forced to get the tattoo. Even though it has been almost a year since the acclaimed movie hit theaters in time for award season. He'll presumably get it in a place that won't be easily noticeable on camera.

Tom Hardy also starred in the hit apocalyptic action thriller Mad Max: Fury Road last year, which went home with a few Oscars itself. The actor will next star in the FX series Taboo and he'll next be seen collaborating once again with his Inception and Dark Knight Rises director Christopher Nolan in the WWII drama Dunkirk. Perhaps Tom Hardy will start his 2017 off fresh with his brand new Leonardo DiCaprio Tattoo.
