Deadline New York is reporting that the Paul Haggis script Honeymoon With Harry might be getting made with Robert De Niro and Bradley Cooper starring. It also looks like Jonathan Demme could be directing.

Two weeks ago De Niro and Cooper did a read through of the roles. This script has seen many production stops and starts for the past 6 years. One of it's problems appears to be not being able to fit into the "comedy" or "drama" genres. It has elements of both in its screenplay.

Cooper might play a formerly self-centered womanizing booze-hound who met the right girl and changed his ways. De Niro could play the girl's father. He sees himself in Cooper's character and wants them to break up. They end up getting engaged but then the girl dies before their wedding. The groom "goes on their honeymoon to drown his sorrows and drink himself to death. There, he meets his almost father-in-law, who has come to spread his daughter's ashes on her favorite beach."

The script is adapted from an unpublished novel by Bart Baker. Over the years Paul Haggis was going to direct the project, other actors were involved, it had budgetary problems, and all of this led to Honeymoon With Harry sitting on the shelf.

Until now, it seems.
