Neill Blomkamp's Robocop Returns will feature the iconic original suit. The director gave a small status update on the project, which was originally announced last year. The District 9 director is still extremely excited about the movie and wants to do justice to the original. Fans of the franchise weren't too happy about the new suit used in the 2014 remake, so they should all be pretty happy to learn that Peter Weller's suit in Paul Verhoeven's original classic will be used yet again.

One of the things Neill Blomkamp has said since the beginning is he wants to make RoboCop Returns feel like Paul Verhoeven made it. He echoed the same sentiment when a fan on Twitter asked for a status update. Blomkamp answered and said, "Script is being written. Going well! Imagine watching Verhoeven do a follow up film." When another fan chimed in and asked about the original RoboCop suit being used in his project, the director responded by saying, "1 million% original."

Producer Ed Neumeier last gave an update about RoboCop Returns back in January of this year. The movie is based on a rough script Neumeier and Michael Miner wrote in the late 1980s, but was later shelved due to the writer's strike. That original script is serving as the basis for the new movie with some significant tweaks, which Neumeier could not go into details about for obvious reasons. The producer/writer also said that Neill Blomkamp wants the project to be like "if Verhoeven had directed a movie right after RoboCop," which falls right in line with what we have heard about RoboCop Returns since it was first announced.

A brief description of RoboCop Returns states that "anarchy reigns and the fate of Detroit hangs in the balance as RoboCop makes his triumphant return to fight crime and corruption." That's not a whole lot to work with, but it's exciting to know that the project is being worked on and will finally see the light of day. As for when the cameras start rolling, that is another question. There is no release date at this time, but some more updates should be coming down the wire now.

RoboCop Returns is a dream project for Neill Blomkamp. "The original definitely had a massive effect on me as a kid," says the director. Throughout the years, Blomkamp has different connections with the 80s classic, but right now, he is focusing on the identity aspect of the original along with the human connection, so expect those factors to come into play when his movie hits theaters. While we know the original suit is making a comeback, fans are wondering if Peter Weller with return too. That seems unlikely at the moment, but stranger things have happened, like the time when Weller got back into character for a KFC commercial.
