We're quickly coming up on the big theatrical premiere of the first-ever Star Wars spin-off. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will be in theaters December 16th, and today, we get new footage that shows us Jyn Erso's backstory. It also reveals Jyn's unique connection to the Force.

In previous trailers, we've learned that Jyn Erso is the daughter of Galen Erso, the man responsible for turning the Death Star into a deadly weapon. Galen is taken away from his young daughter by the Empire to help with the construction of this hulking space station. Here, we also get to meet Jyn Erso's mother Lyra, played by Valene Kane. She is seen giving the young Jyn a crystal necklace. She then whispers 'Trust the force'.

This scene is interesting on a number of different levels. We see Jyn's first introduction to the Force through her mother. That offers some new clues as to why Jyn would tell her troops 'May the Force Be With You' as they head into battle, as seen in previous trailers and other preview footage. But here, it looks like Jyn is now in possession of a Kyber Crystal.

Kyber crystals are rare, Force-attuned crystals that grew in nature and were found on scattered planets across the galaxy. They are used by the Jedi and the Sith in the construction of their lightsabers. As part of Jedi training, younglings were sent to the Crystal Caves of the ice planet of Ilum to harvest crystals and then construct their own lightsabers. There were also larger, rarer crystals of great power and that, according to legends, were used at the heart of ancient superweapons by the Sith. This includes the deadly Death Star.

So, does Jyn's crystal play a bigger role in the construction of the Death Star? Is it a crystal that will later be used in one of the lightsabers belonging to a well-known Jedi or Sith? According to Star Wars lore, a Sith can bend a Kyber crystal to their will, causing it to bleed, which results in the Sith having their iconic red lightsabers. But a Kyber crystal can also be healed, a process that turns the crystal white. While Jyn Erso's crystal appears clear colored in nature, it could also be perceived as being white. Is this a healed Kyber crystal? We don't know.

But Jyn Erso's backstory isn't the only thing interesting about this trailer. It delivers a lot of new footage including a never before scene moment with big villain Darth Vader. The end of the trailer even teases an epic show down between Darth Vader and Jyn Erso, but considering they appear to be in two very different locations, this is likely just some inventive trailer editing used to get fans psyched for the movie, if they weren't already. Even though this trailer is delivered with subtitles, it is hands down the best trailer released thus far. And it shows off some very cool Death Star destruction. Check it out.
