Last fall, just months before the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Facebook debuted the first ever 360 video that offered fans a look at the desert landscape of Jakku. Since then, 360 videos have become more and more popular, with movies such as Jurassic World, The Conjuring 2 and even HBO's Game of Thrones utilizing these innovative videos that gives fans a 360-degree view of the scene. Today LucasFilm has brought this technology back to debut a new video from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which offers an early glimpse at the Death Star while it's still under construction.

Verizon and LucasFilm's ILMxLAB have debuted Rogue One: Recon, a short immersive 360 experience connected to Rogue One letting viewers experience Star Wars from the perspective of an everyday Rebel X-wing pilot in space, culminating with a fight in an unexpected battle against the evil Empire. Rogue One: Recon A Star Wars 360 Experience is presented by Verizon and created by ILMxLAB. Debuting online on Facebook, it is also available exclusively in Samsung Gear VR Headsets in 1400 Verizon stores.

From Lucasfilm comes the first of the Star Wars standalone films, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, an all-new epic adventure. In a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire's ultimate weapon of destruction. This key event in the Star Wars timeline brings together ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things, and in doing so, become part of something greater than themselves.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is directed by Gareth Edwards and stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Riz Ahmed, with Jiang Wen and Forest Whitaker. Kathleen Kennedy, Allison Shearmur and Simon Emanuel are producing, with John Knoll and Jason McGatlin serving as executive producers. The story is by John Knoll and Gary Whitta, and the screenplay is by Chris Weitz and Tony Gilroy. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story opens in U.S. theaters on December 16, 2016.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will be the first of three Star Wars spin-offs that have been announced at this time. LucasFilm will start production next year on the Han Solo spin-off, which has Alden Ehrenreich set to star as Han Solo, with Donald Glover recently coming aboard as Lando Calrissian. LucasFilm is also developing a third spin-off that will reportedly center on Boba Fett, which is tentatively set for release in 2020.
