Are These Classic Star Wars Characters in Rogue One?
In just a week, Disney and Lucasfilm will finally be releasing Star Wars: Rogue One, the first ever Star Wars movie to take place outside of the main Skywalker saga. Aside from Darth Vader and Mon Mothma, this spin-off won't feature a whole lot of recognizable characters from the franchise. At least we didn't think so. Now, It sounds like there may be some more familiar faces showing up in the movie. Fair warning: this article may contain relatively significant spoilers for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, so if you don't want to have anything spoiled, turn away now.
The alleged news comes courtesy of a Reddit user who goes by the name of tphilb and was posted to the Star Wars Speculation subreddit. The information is pretty hard to verify, so you may not want to take it as gospel, but he or she claims that they have seen the credits for Star Wars: Rogue One and in the credits, it was revealed that characters like Princess Leia (played by an actress named Ingvild Deila) and C3PO will appear in the movie. Just for some context, here is how tphilb explained this potentially revelatory information, but even they warn this should be taken as rumor for the moment.
"Because of my line of work, some bits of Rogue One came across my desk the other day. While I couldn't take a picture of the screen (phone not allowed, and though a girl has no name, she likes her job), I was able to scribble enough notes that offer some information about who is (and is not) in the film. When I got home, I snooped around online, and some of this isn't listed anywhere. Wanted to offer to share this with the good people of reddit... but I understand that I don't have verifiable proof (until the release date) that this is the real deal, and I didn't want to post this on /r/StarWars and get downvoted into oblivion. Fortunately, their mods suggested I post here. Anyway... here's my best recreation of bits of the end credits. For now, take them as rumors..."
In addition to Princess Leia and C-3PO, this post also seems to further confirm that Grand Moff Tarkin, originally played by the late Peter Cushing in Star Wars: A New Hope, will have a role in Star Wars: Rogue One. He will supposedly be played by Guy Henry, who played Pius Thicknesse in the Harry Potter movies. Given that the events of Rogue One are said to take place right before the original Star Wars, it would make sense for each of these characters to show up in some capacity. It is very unclear how big of a role any of them will play, but it seems like it would be relatively small. In any case, it is interesting that the movie will seemingly have some more connective tissue to A New Hope and the greater Star Wars universe.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has very high expectations placed on it, both in terms of quality and box office, just by virtue of the fact that it is a Star Wars movie. The movie is currently on track to make around $130 million opening weekend, but box office tracking has been somewhat unreliable for big movies lately, so it could easily top that. But with the tremendous pre-sale numbers, $130 million is starting to seem a little low. Assuming this report does turn out to be true, once word gets out that some more familiar Star Wars faces are in the movie that could help generate interest among more casual fans.
Star Wars: Rogue One tells the story of how the Rebels got their hands on the Death Star plans, as originally teased in the opening crawl in Star Wars: A New Hope back in 1977. The movie stars Felicity Jones, Mads Mikkelsen, Riz Ahmed, Ben Mendelsohn, Alan Tudyk, Diego Luna, Jiang Wen, Donnie Yen, Wen Jiang and Forest Whitaker, in addition to featuring Darth Vader, who is once again being voiced by James Earl Jones. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on December 16 and tickets are on sale now. Here's a look at the girl who may or may not be playing the new Princess Leia.
